Axios: A Spartan Tale

I am Axios of Sparta, and I was born to kill. At age seven, I left home to train with other boys where we were taught obedience, solidarity, military strategy, and how to withstand pain. My harsh upbringing stripped me of my weaknesses and forced me to become strong. Ruthless.

But, I craved something greater—a life I could never have.

Against all odds, and the toughest training a warrior could endure, I found an unexpected love in the arms of a fellow Spartan. He was the very air I breathed and the water that sustained me. Fighting side by side with him, we were invincible. Where he went, I followed.

However, there was no place for love in Sparta. Feelings were for the weak. The only life for a Spartan was one of battle and brutality with no guarantee of tomorrow. In times of war, all men were put to the test, but the greatest challenge for us was not one of swords and spears, but of the heart.

I’m just in awe with this book. This book wrecked me. It tore my heart out and put it back in. I don’t even know where to start with this review. This book took my breath away. It was so well written. The vivid picture it paints while you’re reading it. It’s truly amazing. This book seriously need to be made into a movie!

The author takes you on this great and very realistic journey to becoming a spartan warrior. The things these poor boys have to go through at such a young age. The things they have to endure…. will break your heart.
They break these young boys down and build them back up to be emotionless killing machines.
It was hard to read at times. I felt for them. For the life that was so cruelly dealt to them. They never had a choice for anything. They did what was told of them.

As I read on these boys became men and I understood why they had such hard training from an early age. Going to war was no joke. They needed every skill possible in order to survive being out in war.
My stomach would be in knots every time they went off to war!

All the characters in this book were wonderful. I felt like I knew them personally. Having read about them from age 7 all the way on up to their mid thirties. Haden, Theon, Quill had my heart just as much as Eryx & Axios did.
They all started off as strangers then turned in to friend and at the end became brothers.
These characters will stay with me for a long time!

Watching Eryx and Axios relationship unfold from the beginning was so beautiful. The love they had for each other was so strong. You could feel the love they had pouring out of the pages as you read them!

“There is nothing I wouldn’t do for you,” he whispered, pressing his forehead to mine. “I would kill any man, go any distance, and burn the whole world down if it meant keeping you safe.”

They showed each other everyday how much they loved each other and at the same time they knew the reality of their situation. They were warriors. And had a duty.

“I do not fear death because I’m afraid of dying, Ery… I fear it because it would take me from you.”

And that was a constant struggle. They only had little glimpses of peace here and there. Because their duty of being a Spartan warrior was always hanging over their heads.

“I love you, Ax,” he said, becoming serious. “I know we may not ever have the life you wish to have, but I hope having my word is enough. My heart and my body are yours until the end of our days. I swear it to you, by the gods.”

I loved everything about this book. This is the first book by this author that I have read. It most definitely won’t be my last. I just want to thank her for bringing all these characters to life. I’ll never forget them.

“For as long as there is breath in my lungs, I will love you. Only you. And even when I leave this world, I will still belong to you, for my soul will forever seek yours. In both this life and the next.”

“My warrior. My lover. My heart.”

Evolutionary psychology professor Henry Hathaway is ready to spend his birthday the same way he does every year: a good teeth cleaning followed by lunch with his brother. But when he receives a wrong-number text confirming the details of a date, he does what any considerate person would—he goes to meet them and explain why they’ve been stood up.

Asher Wescott hadn’t expected his blind date to go well, because when do they ever? Henry shows up instead, and things are suddenly looking up. Socially awkward and attached to his routines, Henry is nevertheless one of the most charming and kind men Asher has met in a long time.

Too bad he’s not Henry’s type.

An accidental date, an impulsive kiss, and a few conflicted feelings later, can Asher get Henry to see the world—and him—in a different light?

I just happened to run across this author. She’s a first time read for me. I always get a little nervous when reading new (to me) authors. You never know what you’re going to get. I have to admit. This book started off a little rocky for me. But totally won me over at the end.
I absolutely loved Asher’s characters! He was just the perfect guy! And I think just the right guy for Henry.

Ok… I really enjoyed this book. I read it in one sitting. I liked the characters but the dialogue in the beginning of this book was hard to get through. I had a hard time with it. It was just too technical. At times I felt like I was reading a psychology book. Some of the stuff was just hard to get through. It was just a little over the top.
It just felt too clinical for me…. it took away from the story.

I think there needed to be a balance with all the psychology talk. It felt at times that Henry was looking to medically diagnosed himself as to why he was having these feelings for Asher so late in life. He just couldn’t wrap his head around it all. But, I loved how he didn’t let these feelings interfere with his growing relationship with Asher. He fully went in head first. And I loved that!

Right from the beginning you knew what kind of personality Henry had. He was so formal and technical. Very precise about things. He was socially awkward. He didn’t know how to act with other people outside of his work environment.
I absolutely loved how Henry and Asher met. He was just so taken aback with Asher when they first met. Asher was laid back. He went with the flow and brought Henry out of his comfort zone every time they were together. He brought a side out of Henry that he never knew he had. I think that’s what appealed to Henry And made a very big impression on him.

I loved their first kiss! Super hot! And I loved the star scene! Another hot moment!

This book changed for me once Henry let’s himself go and fully embraces Asher. He stops the Psych analogy talk and the book flows with them being together.
I loved the ending of this book. Henry has come a long way. And he definitely deserves his happy ending. No more boring nights for him!

Overall all… even with all the psychology talk. I enjoyed this book. I will definitely be checking out this authors other books!

SMITTY’S SHERIFF by Cardeno C.

Smitty’s Sheriff, a sexy, heart-warming MM romance by Cardeno C. is available now!

SmittysSherrif_eBookFinal

Todd is too flakey. Richard is too stubborn. Together, they’re perfect. A May-December couple get a second chance at love.

Retired soldier Richard Davis wants a stable life in a quiet town with a forever man. Becoming the sheriff of Hope, Arizona, accomplishes two of his three goals, but instead of finding a serious partner, he falls for too-young-to-be-committed and too-flakey-to-be-serious Todd Smitty. Richard won’t find the right man if he’s obsessed with the wrong one, so he walks away from Todd.

It’s lust at first sight when Todd meets his sister’s army friend. He sets his sights on the worldly, strong, stable older man, and the more time he spends with Richard, the harder he falls. But after three years together, Richard cuts off all contact with no explanation.

When a mutual obligation requires Todd to move into Richard’s house, he’s thrilled at the opportunity to earn a second chance. Ignoring Todd from across town was hard enough. Can Richard resist temptation under his own roof?

Excerpt:

“Todd.” Leanne snapped her gaze toward him. “You’re not too young to know the nickname people used to call guys named Richard, are you?

“Uh.” Todd blinked and darted his gaze between Rich and Leanne. They were finally paying attention to him and all he wanted was to go back to being invisible.

Dick,” she said. “Big D got his nickname before we met, but some of us in my squad figured it wasn’t just about his last name being Davis. So we had a bet going.”

She flicked her gaze to Rich again, as if expecting him to interrupt.

He didn’t.

“Problem is, we couldn’t agree on which side won because we couldn’t get solid evidence.” She focused on Todd. “But now I have an eyewitness.”

“I, uh, I don’t—” Todd stammered, hating being in the middle of what felt like an argument.

“Don’t let Sparky get to you,” Rich said, still completely unbothered.

“Some of the guys saw Big D in the latrines, and they said he’s big all over, but when they tried to collect on the bet, the other side made a good point.” She narrowed her eyes menacingly at Rich. “If the man’s a show-er, that means he isn’t grow-er, so he doesn’t actually have a big D, now does he? That means the other side should win.”

Todd drew his eyebrows together and tried to follow Leanne’s question. “Are you saying you guys have a bet going on the size of Rich’s dick?”

“Yep.” Leanne leaned against the chairback, looking smug. “And you, little brother, are going to settle that bet.”

Normally, Todd had no problem talking about a guy’s package. Hell, in the right situation, dicks were damn near his favorite topic. But he had never spoken to anyone about Rich’s body or, really, anything else related to Rich because he knew that was off limits. Of course, Leanne was asking him the question because she already knew he had the answer.

Flicking his gaze toward Rich, Todd said, “Am I allowed to…”

“It’s a simple question,” Leanne snapped. “Is he a grow-er or a show-er?”

Rich didn’t tell him to stay quiet so Todd figured he had permission to answer. “Both.”

She blinked.

“Seriously.” He bobbed his head. “Length, girth.” He held his hands far apart. “It’s awesome.” As long as he had permission to share, he figured he should be thorough in his explanation. “His balls too.”

Leanne coughed.

“I mean it. They’re huge. Each one’s a mouthful by itself.”

“Ehm.” Leanne cleared her throat. “Thanks.” Looking decidedly uncomfortable, she held her palm up in a stop motion. “I’m good on the details. You don’t need to keep going.”

“Are you sure?” After a lifetime of being the butt of the joke with his siblings, Todd enjoyed turning the table. “I can sketch you a picture, but I’ll need one of those extra-long pieces of paper if you want it to scale.”

“That won’t be necessary.” Leanne actually blushed. “I’m all set.”

Rich threw his head back and laughed. “Thanks, Todd. Eighteen years these jackasses have had the silly bet going and I do believe you just put it to rest.”

Thrilled with the praise and relieved to be playing and flirting with Rich again, Todd smiled broadly. “No problem. When it comes to your big D, I’m always willing to lend a hand.”

He settled into the chair, comfortable for the first time that night, and when the conversation turned back to stories about people he didn’t know, he truly didn’t mind. Eighteen years was a long time. If Rich had cared about putting an end to the bet, he’d probably had a dozen different chances. That he did it now, meant his goal had been less about the bet and more about a point. Todd knew something about Rich that nobody else did, or at least nobody who mattered enough to meet his friends. That meant Todd mattered. Leanne knew that now. And so did he.

RELEASE DAY BLITZ & BOOK REVIEW: The Difference Between Us by Rachel Higginson

RevisedDBU1I’m cursed.

At least when it comes to finding Mr. Right.

I’m tired of men that only want one night stands or blind dates that are nothing but awkward and uncomfortable. I’m tired of avoiding inappropriate text messages and the constant disappointment of always meeting Mr. Wrong.

After all these years of dates that lead nowhere, I can admit that it’s me. I’m the problem. I’m shy and picky and cursed. Definitely cursed.

So I’ve decided two things.

The first? I’m giving up dating and relationships and men in general. Maybe, possibly, forever.

The second? I’m going to have to try harder to avoid Ezra Baptiste.

If I couldn’t hack it in the kiddy pool of dating, I certainly can’t swim in his deep end. He’s too successful. Too intense. He’s all man when I’m used to nothing but boys pretending to be grownups. He’s everything I’m afraid to want and so far out of my league we might as well be different species entirely.

So he’ll need to find a different artist to paint his mural. And a different graphic designer to help him with his website. He’ll need to find someone else to glare at and flirt with and kiss.

It can’t be me.

We’re too different.

Melanie’s 4.5 Star Review:

image1 (2)I have always enjoyed Rachel Higginson’s writing. Whether she was making me ugly cry or swooning like a mad woman. I’ll basically read anything she churns out because I know that I’m in for a good time. In her latest release, The Difference Between Us, Ms. Higginson brings us something light and sweet but without a doubt, one full of heart.

The protagonists in this book are ones we are quite familiar with (if you’ve read the first book in this standalone series). Ezra who is Killian Quinn’s best bud and Molly who is Vera Delane’s BFF are front and center in this book. From the very moment that these two met one another in The Opposite of You I just knew that there was a really good story brewing. My assumptions were proved right.

I loved, loved the mystery and intrigue behind Ezra. A tall, dark, handsome man who has made a success of himself after crawling out of a not so easy childhood. Intimidating yet unbelievably warm and caring, you can’t help but fall head over heels in love with him.  I mean when he says things like, “You should have always been Jasmine” after Molly confesses her and Vera’s obsession with Aladdin as young kids—fighting to be Jasmine each time they saw the film… C’mon, how would that not melt your heart?! And Molly, God did I love her character too. I loved how protective and grateful she was of her friendship with Vera. I can always judge a person’s character by how they value their family and friends and Molly Maverick was one of the good ones. The interaction and the progression of Ezra and Molly’s relationship was sweet as candy. It drew many sighs and my awes out of me. The back and forth emails between them were so fun to read as well.

You can’t help but get lost in the pages of this book. The Difference Between Us will leave a huge perma-smile on your face. A feel good love story about two unlikely people who at the end you can’t ever imagine being without one another. I enjoyed this book a lot and I swear it ya’ll, this is the perfect end of summer read.
