They fell in love at thirteen.
He wrote a book about it at twenty.
She watched him walk away at twenty-three.
And he made the New York Times Best Sellers list at twenty-four.

Campbell ‘Cam’ Potter stood idly by as August Wyatt took over the world one word at a time. Chapter by chapter, people fell in love with the story he created – the events she lived. And now the book was being made into a movie, it was only a matter of time before August was back in their small hometown in Georgia.

The problem was, when August left five years ago, Cam made a promise to herself. The ending in his book would be the conclusion to their story. There was no sequel, no second chance, no possibility of ever seeing him again. He obliterated her heart and she was determined to never let it happen again.

That is, until Cam gets a late night text from the heartbreaker himself.
New chapters are written, fresh storylines are explored and Cam and August find a familiarity in one another.

Sometimes THE END doesn’t mean it’s over.

Bringing my body into his with a tug, he squeezes my shoulders. Only, this hug feels different. It doesn’t feel like all the other ones we’ve shared since he came back into town. I’m baffled at first, my arms locked around his torso. He doesn’t let me free and I think he may need this. I think he might need me. He sighs, his face falling into the crook of my neck and I finally understand why it’s so different. I don’t know why it took me so long, but my heart soars and my grip tightens. I force my eyelids closed and I breathe him in, using every ounce of my ability to give him back what he’s offering me so willingly.

He doesn’t have to say the words, but I hear them loud and clear. He’s been looking for someone to care about him in this town. Not someone to fawn over him or tell him what he wants. I’ve shown him that even without the book, he’s still important and this gesture – his foreign and surprising hug – is his way of telling me he appreciates it.

He clutches the back of my neck, his signature grasp, and breathes me in as I cling to his sweater, willing my eyes to stay closed. If I look at him or our reflection in the mirror above the headboard, I’m going to lose it.

Sighing contently, he pulls back and I do the same, opening my eyes.

“Night,” he offers with a smile, bringing his lips to my forehead for a split second before turning around and sufficiently closing me out, unzipping his bag.

I blink a few times, speechless as I watch him pull his sweater up and over his head, tossing it on the bed. His muscles strain and the dimples just above his pant line are so pronounced, my fingers ache to touch them. I turn away, reminding myself that we’re just friends. Friends only, Cam. Hands off. No touching his back dimples. It’s inappropriate and…oh, God, he’s unbuckling his pants.

Walking out of the door with embarrassed haste, I close it behind me.

My skin, tingling and hot, I trace my forehead with my fingertips. The prickle of his kiss still evident. Eager to erase the aftereffect of his touch, I scrub my head like a moron, accidentally creating a deep red spot. It doesn’t help. My skin scorches for long minutes.

After changing into pajamas, I climb into bed and wrap myself in the comforter. I need to sleep and forget the last three hours happened.

Just as I’m about to shut my eyes, my phone goes off with a text message.

August: Tonight was exactly what I needed.

Another one comes in.

August: You’re still so important to me. Please don’t ever forget that.

I chew on my lip and study the words until they become indecipherable. Turning on my side, I plug my phone into the charger and close my eyes.

I’m in so much trouble.

BOOK REVIEW: Before I Ever Met You by Karina Halle

unnamedBlurb:

I first met William McAlister when I was just a teenager.

He was handsome, had a beautiful wife and was on the verge of success, having just joined my father as his business partner. Mr. McAlister was full of smooth charm, but back then he was barely a blip on my radar. Just a family friend.

Fast forward ten years: I’m 25 years old and a single mom trying to make things right for her seven-year old son. I’ve made some mistakes, grappled with my demons and now I’m back in the city of Vancouver, getting a second chance at a better life.

I’ve started by working for my father’s production company as an executive assistant. My first day on the job and I already know I could have a promising career there.
That is until I see Will McAlister for the first time in a decade.

Now recently divorced and as sophisticated as always, Will has gone from being my father’s friend and business partner to something so much more.

We’re both older, for one thing, and he just oozes this worldly confidence and stark sexuality. Combined with his tall, muscular build and sharp suits, strong jaw and bedroom eyes, Will has turned into one hell of a distraction.

A distraction I’m having a hard time staying away from, considering his office is right across from my desk and I work with him in such close proximity.

But it’s just a harmless crush, right?

It’s just an innocent fantasy of screwing him on his desk, right?

It can’t ever be more because he’s my father’s best friend, business partner, and my boss.

Right?

Wrong.

Melanie’s 4.5 Star Review:

I knew I needed this book before I even had it because the blurb alone just about set my heart on fire. Karina Halle’s Before I Even Met You was everything I could have ever hoped for. This was packed full of romance turning readers like myself into mush. It won major swoon worthy points with just Will McAlister alone. The guy had me looking like that heart eyed emoji. So many moments had me sighing and gushing. This was THE perfect weekend read and honestly would make for the perfect work week pick me up as well. It is guaranteed that this will brighten your day.

Karina Halle’s writing is indisputably one of the best out there. What I love most about her work is that someone, somewhere has somehow lived what she’s written. Her writing is honest and easy to relate to but yet they all have enough fictional power to make you believe in magic. Before I Even Met You was another to add to that list. The heroine, Jackie Phillips has had a rough go due to a decision she decided to make 7 years ago. Though she painfully pays for it in many ways, that decision also gave her the most precious gift of all—Tyson her 7yr. old son who has got to be one of the most adorable, lovable fictional kids I’ve been introduced to. I mean this kid deserves his own book one day.

Finding herself suddenly catapulted back into her childhood home after being estranged from her parents, she struggles with regret and frustration over her past. She is determined to find her way and to land on her own two feet, she takes a job at her father’s film company, Mad Men as an Executive assistant to Will McAlister. Will flippin’ McAllister who is 16 years her senior who also happens to be her father’s much younger friend and business partner. A recently divorced Will who himself had been burned in one of the worst ways imaginable. He too finds himself back in a city he thought he’d left behind. With both Jackie and Will finding themselves in situations they’d never anticipated, they quickly collide into one another’s lives and find reprieve when in each other’s company. What unfolds between them is one that could only be written in books but one that we should all be so lucky to experience.

I admired Will’s tenacity and Jackie’s fortitude. I was on board with Will’s natural ability to bring Ty into the fold, never once being asked to. He is one of the good guys and one that Jackie so deserved to have in her life after everything that she had to give up. There were so many heartwarming moments that Jackie and Will shared, moments that begin to creep into your heart as well. I also loved that Ms. Halle threw in some light hearted scenes which made me laugh out loud—it was yar. And let me just say that the epilogue was EVERYTHING! Every friggin’ thing you could wish for – I was beside myself with glee!

While the blurb may lead you to believe that this is just another taboo romance—a much older man who happens to be her father’s friend, Before I Ever Met You is far from it. This was so much more. It’s full of heart and inspiration. This is through and through a love story. A story of a second chance at love with the right person. A story of finding redemption and salvation through sincere and worthy love. I recommend this book to my fellow hopeless romantics. If you’re looking to get lost in the clouds, this is it. Not to mention, you will WANT to meet Will “Hung” McAlister and experience just what he has to offer.

Music To My Ears:

In the morning when I wake
And the sun is coming through,
Oh, you fill my lungs with sweetness,
And you fill my head with you.
Shall I write it in a letter?
Shall I try to get it down?
Oh, you fill my head with pieces
Of a song I can’t get out.
Can I be close to you?
Oh-oh-oh-ooh, ooh
Can I be close to you?
Ooh, ooh.
Can I take it to a morning
Where the fields are painted gold
And the trees are filled with memories
Of the feelings never told?
When the evening pulls the sun down,
And the day is almost through,
Oh, the whole world it is sleeping,
But my world is you.
Can I be close to you (Ah)?
Ooh (aah), ooh (aah).
Can I be close to you (Ah)?
Ooh (aah), ooh (aah).
Can I be close to you (Ah)?
Ooh (aah), ooh (aah).
Can I be close to you (Ah)?
Ooh (aah), ooh (aah).
Can I be close to you?
Ooh, ooh.

BETRAYED BY LIES - cover

From the USA Today bestselling author of the Unbreakable series, comes a sexy, heart-wrenching novel…Betrayed by Lies.

As an ATF agent, bringing down the Estrada cartel has been my sole mission. I’m a skilled agent, determined and fearless, but a relentless pursuit and a willingness to risk everything almost killed me.

A year later, when an opportunity in Los Angeles presents itself, I jump at the chance to start over and rebuild the career and life I almost lost.

Kate Stevens was not part of my new plan. I never expected she would be the one to save me from my past. She was exactly what I needed—smart, beautiful and independent. I finally have a future I look forward to.

Only nothing in my life ever goes according to plan. Losing Kate is not an option, but fate seems poised to ruin me, and there isn’t a damn thing I can do about it.

Melanie’s 4.5 Star Review:

I didn’t know what to expect from Betrayed by Lies but all I knew was that I was absolutely flippin’ ready for Sam Cortez. It’s been almost a couple of years since Bound by Lies so I was overly anxious to find out what was to become of Sam and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the approach that Rebecca Shea took. Unlike the other two previous books in this series, Sam and Kate’s story isn’t strung together by lies and deceit. Rather it’s filled with a sense of healing and affection. It is fast paced, with an evolving story line from one chapter to the next. It’s a “when you know it, you just know it,” love story.

There was no holding back between Sam and Kate—they were passionate about one another from the very moment they met. This undeniable fire that blazed between them was conveyed not only with words but through the physical intimacy they shared. I didn’t anticipate how crazy hot it would be between the sheets with these two! I honestly don’t know how my smoke alarms didn’t go off with the amount of heat burning through the pages. My poor thighs quivered like I was lifting hundred pound weights above my head. I kept thinking, “damn Rebecca Shea, you need to retitle this book from Betrayed by Lies to Betrayed by Thighs” cause seriously the thigh clench was real and I could not for the life of me wait for my husband to get home (A bit TMI there. Sorry not sorry.) Don’t get me wrong, this book isn’t littered with useless sex scenes that would eventually drive you to boredom. All it needed was 1 scene to make it count and ya’ll…. Ms. Shea? She Made. It. Count! Line, hook, and sinker… Perfect swish into the net from the 3 point line as the buzzer sounds kind… Yep, totally made it count.

While I must admit that the literary masochist in me craved for a little more angst, I also felt that the direction this book took was perfect for Sam. Having endured so much his whole life, he really just needed something to finally go right in his life. Kate Stevens was the game changer. She came into his life at just the right time, to finally give Sam the peace and the happiness he’d been searching for since he’d been pulled away from the people he loved most at such a young age. It was gratifying for me to see his life finally fall into place.

Betrayed by Lies is so unlike what I had thought it would be. It was an enjoyable, fast read with a much sexier and lighter feel than what I’ve come to believe from this author. It was a nice change done for the right character. Sam Cortez seemed to always be the pawn, the one who always seemed to lose more than the others and for him to finally come out the victor makes this fan girl very, very happy.

EXCERPT:

SAM

She shakes her head and laughs. “I don’t judge. It sounds to me like your therapy has helped you see what it is you need versus what you thought you wanted, and I’m so happy you’ve recovered from your injury and you’re able to return to work. So many agents aren’t as lucky as you.” There’s a spark of sadness in her eyes. A look that only the friends and family of those in law enforcement get when they think of those who aren’t as fortunate as I am.

I nod in agreement. “Which is why I was excited to take this opportunity here in L.A. with your brother. He’s giving me another chance to prove myself. California is a fresh start for me.” I smile at her and she smiles in return, and it’s soft, caring, and does things to me that I’m not sure I’m ready for.

“So what do you do?” I ask, turning the questions on her. I’m done spilling my garbage. I want to hear about her.

She drops her eyes from mine and takes another drink of wine before resting it on her thigh. “I’m an attorney. I do corporate law, mostly negotiating and reviewing contracts. It’s extremely boring to someone who’s not interested in legalese, but it keeps me busy and it pays well.” She shrugs.

“Do you ever end up in court?”

“No. Ironically, if there is ever litigation, we typically hire outside counsel. Sounds weird, doesn’t it?” She scrunches her nose up and smiles.

“Not really.” I shake my head. “I get why. You’re an expert at what you do. The attorneys you hire are experts in litigation. Everyone does what they do best.”

“Exactly.”

Our conversation slows, but it’s not uncomfortable in the silence. We both relax in the quiet and jut ‘be’. There’s something to be said for that level of comfort when you’re in the presence of someone else.

“So, when do you think you’ll be moving in?” she asks.

“I’m having some stuff delivered this weekend, so I hope Saturday is okay?” I raise my eyebrow at her, hoping it’s not an inconvenience.

She smiles. “Saturday is perfect.”

“I’m still waiting on a truck from Phoenix, so that’ll be sometime next week, but I’m ready to get out of that hotel. Speaking of that hotel, I really should get going. It’s getting late, and I didn’t mean to keep you up.” I stand up and she follows suit. We both carry our empty glass and beer bottle to the kitchen, and Kate swipes something off the center island.

“This is the key for the house.” She dangles the ring on her pointer finger. “You can have your alarm system installed anytime. If you need anything secured before then, I have a safe and an alarm on this house. You’re welcome to keep anything in here.”

“I appreciate that.” The soft tips of her fingers brush against my palm as she places the key in my hand.

“See you Saturday,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper.

“See you Saturday,” I return. For the first time in a long time, I have something to look forward to.

She smiles again and bites her lip, looking at me with those dreamy eyes. Gosh, I wanna kiss her so badly. And then I figure … why not?So I grab her face and pull her close until our lips touch and our mouths lock. I can’t help but smile as I kiss her because every second I taste her on my lips is another win.

She’s everything I ever wanted, and I think I’m only just beginning to understand what this means for me. For us. For the future.

When our lips unlatch, her face still hovers so close to mine. I can feel her hot breath on my skin, and it makes me wanna do all the dirty stuff I promised the nurses I wouldn’t. The question is: Would anyone notice if we did?

“I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is no,” she quips, putting up a finger.

“Aw … c’mon.” I sigh.

“No! This is a hospital, for crying out loud.” She snorts. “But I’m glad your dick still works perfectly fine.”

“You can break my bones and shoot me down, but nothing will ever stop this monster dick from getting stiff as a rod, trust me.”

She snorts, and I kiss her again for good measure, tasting the sweetness that is her mouth so I can remember it while I’m stuck in this stupid hospital bed and she’s gone home.

“Ugh … I wish I could stay,” she murmurs against my lips.

“Can’t you?”

“I’m not a patient, remember?”

“You could be. There’s an empty bed. I’ll kick Carl out.”

She sniggers from my comment. “You’ll be out in no time.”

“And what then?” I ask. “Are you coming to live with me in the church or …?”

“No, thanks. I don’t wanna get killed by Margaret. Or worse … give her a heart attack.”

“Heart attack?” I frown.

“She’d die of one if she caught us having sex one more time.”

I laugh. “Well, she’ll just have to deal with that then. I mean, c’mon, a man’s got his needs, right? She knows that.”

“Does she even like me?” she asks, toying with my hair.

“Of course, she does.” I grab her hand and kiss the back. “You like me … so she likes you too. The two go hand in hand.”

“Really?” She raises a brow. “Because I know what we did last time we were there, and it wasn’t pretty.”

“We’ll be more … secretive from now on,” I muse, biting my lip. “And I can’t wait to defile the church all over again.” I grunt and pull her onto the bed with me, smashing my lips to hers, fiercely taking her.

I can’t help myself. It’s just the way I am. A needy asshole who can’t get enough of her.

“Stop,” she murmurs, grinning. “We have to behave.”

“For now. But wait until I’m outta here. Then we’ll see how bad I can get.”

“Who says I wanna?”

“Don’t lie to yourself,” I tease, poking her in the belly. “You and I both know you want me.”

“Fine.” She rolls her eyes. “I’ll take you back, but …” She pushes me back with a flat hand. “You still have some making up and groveling to do, Mister.”

With a lopsided smile, I say, “Call me Father Frank … and I’ll make you confess all your sins.”

Ok… shifter books are really not my thing. But I love Alexa Riley books… so I gave this one a chance. Man… I seriously think I’ve been missing out! I really liked this book! It was super hot!

Fiona wasn’t dealing with her grandmother death very well. She had to sell everything to pay off her grandmothers debt. And she was extremely sad about it because there was only one thing she really wanted. And it was a ring her grandmother wore everyday that her grandfather had given to her.

Fiona was desperate… so when her grandmothers lawyer offered Fiona a way to get the ring back. She jumped at the opportunity and really didn’t think about what she was getting herself into.

The whole need and want was so powerful with Reid! Reid’s inner wolf wanted out and he wanted to claim Fiona as soon as he opened the door and laid eyes on her.
Fiona was able to bring out Reid’s inner wolf and from that moment on.

It was baby Making time! LOL

This little novella was seriously hot! I loved all the chasing games Fiona played with Reid. I loved how Reid worshiped her. Wanting to rub his scent all over her!! ( you know what I mean!)

I think I need to check out other shifter books! See what I’ve been missing!!

“Miss Lamb, Mr. Blackden is ready for you.”
I look up at the woman who has been watching me from the corner of her eye since I walked into Blackden Law Firm thirty minutes ago. I don’t blame her. I’m a mess and out of place against the elegant interior of the law firm. I know this, but I just can’t find the will to care. All I want is for this to be finished. I need to take the next step in my life and try to move on, if not for myself then for my grandma.

I told her I’d be okay and that I wouldn’t let my grief drag me down.
My grandma was buried yesterday, but final decisions on her estate had to be made. I’m here for one thing, and one thing alone. I pray there’s enough money from the sale of our home and antiques my grandma left me to cover the bill from the hospital. There is only one thing I want from all of this, and that’s the rose ring.

I want it more than anything. My grandma never took the ring off her finger since my grandpa put it there when he asked her to marry him. When I was little she’d tell me about their love as a bedtime story. Then when she got sick it was my turn to tell her the story as she lay in bed fighting for her life.

Even then I knew she was only fighting to stay with me. She didn’t want to leave me all alone in the world. I don’t remember my parents. The only family I had ever known were my grandma and grandpa, but in my eyes, they were my parents. They raised me, kept me safe, and made me feel loved. She and my grandpa were the only people I had and we’d lost him five years ago. Then it was just the two of us. But now she’s gone and I’m all alone.

I swallow the lump in my throat and stand. Reaching down, I grab my oversized bag that I’ve been carrying around since the auction. It’s all I have left. Everything else is gone.
The woman turns, heading down the long hallway, with her heels clicking on the marble with each step. She leads me to a set of double doors, the dark, carved wood gleaming. She grabs the handle and pulls one open for me. She motions for me to go in and nods as I pass.
“Thank you,” I mumble as I step through.

I hear the click of the door closing behind me as a man behind the desk on the other side of the room stands. I can see a small smile pull at his lips, but I can’t find it in me to smile back.

“Miss Lamb,” he says.

“Was there enough?” The words fall from my lips before I have a chance to think about it. And I’m not sure I care. That’s the only thing I need to know.

“Why don’t you have a seat?” He motions to one of the chairs in front of his desk, not answering my question.

I step forward, getting a better look at him. He doesn’t look like I thought he would. We talked on the phone a few times over the past weeks. His deep voice made me think he’d be a heavy-set man, but he isn’t. He’s thin and tall with brown hair and brown eyes. He gives me a bright smile, this time flashing his teeth. It makes me feel uncomfortable. Against my better judgment I do as he asks, even though I still want my answer more than anything. Something is wrong though. I can feel it.

I drop my bag next to the chair beside me, drawing Mr. Blackden’s eyes. I swear he smiles even more at the sight, and I want to shout at how unfair this all is. It’s nothing to smile at.
“We had to sell all of it, Miss Lamb.”

I close my eyes at his words and try to fight the tears. I nod, then begin to stand. What else is there to say? I don’t want to go over all the odds and ends of how everything was auctioned off. I want out of here. I want to find a cheap hotel for the night and let myself have a good cry.
Tomorrow I’ll pick myself up and see if I can get my old job back. I had to quit to be at my grandma’s side for the last few months, but I have to find something quick.

“But I can get it for you.” His deep voice penetrates my fog of sadness.
I freeze, my eyes snapping to his. He leans back in his chair, seemingly without a care in the world. He doesn’t go on. I feel as if he wants me to beg him, and to be honest, I will. I’m not above anything right now.

“How?” I ask, and he motions for me to sit back down. I drop down into the seat, but scoot to the edge.

“The ring was valued at $200,000,” he informs me. I gasp. “It had to be sold to cover the rest of the debts. Your grandmother had taken out a second mortgage on her home, and she also stated in her will to clear up any debt you had as well.”

I hang my head, my dark brown hair falling forward and shielding my face. I didn’t know she knew. I had run up some credit cards trying to make ends meet for us. I didn’t want her to know about them. I was going to take care of them later. It wasn’t something she needed to worry about.
“You said—”

“That I can get you the ring,” he finishes, sitting up in his chair. He grabs a folder and opens it. A large stack of papers sits inside it, clipped together.

“I have a job proposal for you. It’s a live-in job. You’d stay on the estate and assist the owner in anything he needs.”

“I’ll do it.” I stand up, grabbing a pen off the table. He turns the folder toward me, and I flip through the contract quickly to get to the last page. I see a place I need to sign, so I scratch my name on it quickly and toss the pen down.
When I look back up at Mr. Blackden, I watch as he grabs the papers from me, sliding them back into the folder.

“You smell fertile. Mr. Gold is going to be very pleased.”

I glance at the folder he has in his hand and wrinkle my brow in confusion. I have no idea what he’s talking about, but his words and the look on his face make me think that maybe I should have read that contract…

LOGAN KADE

BOOK 5.5

(written as a standalone for new readers)

CHAPTER ONE

“Logan Motherfucking Kade.”

I heard the slow and sensual drawl behind me and smirked. I’d always know that voice, no matter what frame of mind she was in. Tate Sullivan had screamed underneath me, at me, and behind my back. Anyway there was, I’d had her. Lover. Enemy. Friend. Fuck buddy. We were all of those, and she dropped a bomb on her way out the last time she was in my life. Turning around, she was walking towards me with a sexy stroll, midriff showing under a white halter top and swinging those hips encased in tight-as-skin jeans. I narrowed my eyes and leaned back against my Escalade, sliding my hands inside my front pockets. “Tate Mother Slutting Sullivan.” There was no warmth in my voice. “What do you want?”

She stopped and lifted an eyebrow. “You’re mad.”

I grunted. That wasn’t a question, and she knew better than to give me an opening. I’d fillet her alive, but instead, all I said was, “You fucked with my relationships the last time I saw you.”

“Uh. Yeah.” Her frosted pink lips pressed together, and her eyes glanced away for a second. “About that, you know that wasn’t to get at you, right? That was to fuck things up with your brother. He’s the asshole I wanted to hurt.”

“Not making it better, Tate.”

“Well.” She gestured behind me to the lit up mansion. Hip-hop music blared, even sounding loud where we were, a few yards away in the parking area. “I saw Mason and Samantha inside. They seem happy and still sickeningly in love, so all’s still good in the Kade/Strattan trio.”

“You told Sam that I was in love with her.”

“To my credit, I thought you were.”

“Bullshit.” I pushed off from the Escalade and started toward her. Her eyes widened, and she backed up. I kept advancing. I wasn’t going to hurt her. With all the history between us, physical violence had never been present. Manipulation. Backstabbing deceit. Her just being a slut as she propositioned my brother when we were dating—yeah, that had all been there, but when Tate came back in our lives, she and I became friends. Well, we were fuck buddies, but those were the best types of friends in my opinion.

“You’re scared of me now, Tate? Not when you told my brother’s girlfriend that I was in love with her. You didn’t just hurt Mason. You screwed with all of us. I love Sam. Always have, but only as a friend and a future sister. How’d you feel if I did something like that? If I fucked with your family, the people who you hold most dear?”

She stopped, her back against a truck, and I stepped closer. Looking down, holding her gaze, I let her see the anger there. She didn’t look away. There was shame in her blue eyes, but resolve, too. Her chin trembled and then hardened, and she lifted her chin higher, standing higher as we stood toe to toe. “You did fuck with my life.”

“You mean when we dated for two years, I was in love with you, and you went to my brother’s room to have sex with him? You mean after that, when he called me while you were propositioning him and my dad was nice enough to get you a driver to take you home?”

She bit down on her lip, her eyebrows pinching forward together. “I was naked, and you were both going to cast me out like that.”

I shrugged. “Who was the one who took your clothes off?”

Her. The truth was silent from Tate, until she said, softly, “I thought we were okay, Logan. That’s why I came out here.” She leaned forward, grazing her breasts against my chest. “We were friends when I left.”

We were more than friends, and I reached up, cupping the back of her neck. She shivered, closing her eyes as I said, “When are you going to learn, Tate?”

Her eyes opened. She waited.

“When you fuck with one of mine, you fuck with me.” I leaned forward, my forehead resting against hers. “And you fucked with my family.”

She knew this wasn’t going anywhere. She pulled her head back, out of my hold, and leaned against the truck again. Her shoulders lowered a centimeter. “I didn’t think you’d get hurt by what I said. I really didn’t mean that. I just wanted to hurt Mason. He’s the asshole.”

“No, Tate. We’re both assholes. You just like how I feel inside of you.”

“God.” She shoved me back. Her eyes flared. “You can piss me off.”

My lips curved up. I was being the asshole she liked to screw, and we both knew it. I saw the old lust coming back over her. Her skin was warming. Her lips parted. Her nipples hardened under her shirt. But I meant what I said. “What are you doing here, Tate?”

Her bottom lip stuck out. “You’re going back to Cain U tomorrow.” She rolled her eyes, shaking her head. “I thought one last night, but I can see that’s not going to happen.” She gestured around the parking area. “I thought you were waiting for me. That’s what we used to do. The party’s inside, and you’re out here.”

“Who said I was waiting for you?”

She opened her mouth, then stopped. No sound came out. “God, you’re a prick.”

I rolled my shoulders back. “You’re lucky this is all you’re getting. Did Mason see you inside?”

“No. I saw ’em in the back with Nate, then saw you heading out here. I thought maybe you saw me, too, and here I came.”

My mouth twitched. I could do so much with that last statement, but I held back. She’d take it as flirting. “I came out here for a chick, but it wasn’t you. Sorry.”

“Same old Logan.” Her eyes slid down me and back up, a soft sigh leaving her. “Screwing girls, partying, and,” her eyes fell back to my hand and lingered there. She touched my red knuckles. “still fighting.”

I pulled my hand away. “You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

She sighed, touching the corner of my mouth before letting her hand fall back to her side. “I’m sorry for hurting you. I know I did.”

She was sincere and I frowned at that. “That was a long time ago. I got you back. We made your life hell in school afterwards.”

She groaned, grinning up at me. “You did. Holy shit, you and Mason both did, but I still want to apologize for what I did. I did you wrong, and I’m sorry for that.”

“Apology accepted.” I waited. Tate didn’t do anything without reason. She probably did come out here to proposition me for one more night, and if this had been two years ago, I would’ve taken her up on that, but she hurt my family. There was no going back from that. “What’s going on with you, Tate? Why’d you really come out here?”

“I really did come out to get in your pants, but I know that’s not going to happen.” She lifted up her slim shoulders. “I came to this party to find you and to apologize again. I heard through the grapevine that what I said to Sam had hurt you too. I’m off to my college tomorrow, too, so who knows the next time I’ll get the opportunity to do this in person again.”

I nodded, my suspicions still clouded in my mind. “Okay. Thank you for apologizing again.”

“Logan!”

Tate glanced over her shoulder, seeing the real reason I’d come out to this parking lot, and she rolled her eyes before meeting mine. The girl didn’t matter. She had a good rack, and I loved how she gave blow jobs, but who she was wasn’t important. Both Tate and I knew that even if the girl thought she was, I never lied to them. I never made promises where they’d be my girlfriends. On the rare occasion, I’d have to hurt their feelings, but more often than not, they accepted what I offered. A good time. That was all, and with this girl, I’d forget her name in the morning, or even in an hour depending how good she was. For once, a shadow of doubt crossed my mind. I had loved Tate, or I thought I had. She was my first serious girlfriend and I only had one other since her. I loved sex. I loved to party. And yes, I loved to fight, too, but I never considered changing…until I saw the disappointment in my first ex.

Then I shrugged that off. That was crazy.

“Okay. Well, see you, Logan.”

I nodded. “See you, Tate.”

She turned, one hand hooked in her jean pocket as the other girl slowed, passing her by. Tate ignored the girl and said, “Give me a call if you ever change your ways.”

My side-grin turned cocky. “Tate, if that ever happens, you’d be the last girl I’d fall for.”

She laughed. “And there’s the asshole again. Thanks. I almost forgot for a second there.”

“No problem. I’m here if you need an asshole.”

She shook her head and sauntered away, holding two fingers up over her shoulder. “Deuces, Kade. I never thought I’d be saying this, but I really do hope your next year is a great one.” She paused, glancing back, and her voice came out softly, “I hope you fall in love. You can feel what the rest of us feel.”

She left after that, and I shook my head, before pulling the girl against me. That was never going to happen, and then I lowered my head, my lips finding hers, and I stopped thinking altogether.

***I Do, Babe: A Novella (Hades Hangmen #5.5) is to be read AFTER Damnable Grace (Hades Hangmen #5)***

“Mae,” Bella whispered as I walked from the changing room and stood on the elevated plinth opposite my friends and sisters. The mirror was behind me, but I did not yet dare look at my reflection. I glanced at Bella sat beside Ruth, her mother-in-law and Rider’s mama. Her eyes were filling with tears as she stared at me. Her hands were in front of her mouth.
“Do you like it?” I ran my hand over my pronounced stomach.
Bella nodded. “You are perfect,” she whispered. Ruth nodded in agreement.
I looked at Maddie. “Madds?”
She smiled warmly. “You are beautiful, Mae, this dress only enhances that. But this gown could not suit you more if you tried.”
“Styx will love it,” Lilah said and held Grace tighter on her lap.
“You look like a Disney princess,” Grace said.
A hand came down on my arm. I turned to see Beauty behind me. “You ever gonna look in the mirror, darlin’?” She smiled. This boutique belonged to a friend of Beauty’s, and Beauty had practically organized my wedding for me. I was clueless where to even begin.
“You look good, Mae.” I smiled at Letti as she sat uncomfortably on the couch. She had told me she was here to support me, but she had no opinion in such matters as wedding dress shopping. Or anything girly, she’d said affectionately.
“Turn, honey,” Lilah said and I nodded my head. I had no idea why I was so nervous. I knew that Styx loved me and I loved him. I felt as though I had been waiting for this day my whole life. That I had been waiting for the day I finally cemented him as mine. Forever mine, and me forever his.
Closing my eyes, I turned, allowing Beauty to guide me. “You ready?” she whispered. I pulled up the image of Styx in my mind. Me in his arms as we lay in bed. His large tattooed arms holding me close as we spoke. His voice gruff and deep. Then I pictured us laughing. The infamous Hangmen Mute of the Hades Hangmen, so different with me than with anybody else. To others he was aloof, silent, and menacing. But to me, he was loving, caring, and the most beautiful soul in the world.
The other half of my heart.

Damnable Grace By Tillie Cole Blog Tour

EVEN THE BROKEN, THROUGH LOVE, CAN FIND GRACE…

Secrets never stay hidden.

The burden of guilt never lifts from the heart.

Born and raised in The Order of David, Sister Phebe knows nothing but cult life. Head of the Sacred Sisters of New Zion, Phebe was groomed from childhood for one purpose: to seduce. Prized as a harlot, as a New Zion whore, Phebe is taken from the doomed cult by Meister, the notorious leader of the Aryan Brotherhood. Taken as his possession. Taken to be the woman who will obey his every sexual demand. Under his heavy hand, Phebe finds herself in a place much worse than she could ever have imagined… with absolutely no one to help. And no glimpse of hope.

Xavier ‘AK’ Deyes is content with his life as Sergeant-At-Arms of the Hades Hangmen. Leader of the infamous ‘Psycho Trio’ and ex-special ops sniper, AK knows how to fight. Experienced in warfare and schooled in military operations, AK is vital to the Hangmen. When his Vice President needs help retrieving his missing sister-in-law, Phebe, from a Klan-funded trafficking ring, AK volunteers to go in. AK remembers the redhead from New Zion. Remembers everything about her from the single time they met—her red hair, blue eyes and freckled face. But when he finds her, heavily drugged and under Meister’s control, her sorry condition causes him to remember more than the beautiful woman he once tied to a tree. Saving Phebe forces hidden demons from his past to return. A past he can never move on from, no matter how hard he tries.

As AK fights to help Phebe, and in turn she strives to help him, they realize their secret sins will never leave them alone. Kindred broken souls, they realize the only way they can be rid of their ghosts is to face them together and try to find peace.

Despair soon turns to hope, and damaged hearts soon start to heal. But when their deep, painful scars resurface, becoming too much to bear, the time comes when they must make a heavy choice: stay forever damned; or together, find grace.

Dark Contemporary Romance. Contains explicit sexual situations, violence, disturbingly sensitive and taboo subjects, offensive language and very mature topics. Recommended for age 18 and over.

These books are not easy to review. What these characters go though is pretty hard to stomach. Just when you think it can’t get any worse… it does! The things AK and Phepe have gone through were so sad. They both were so broken. Haunted by the memories of their past. Reliving the memories like a film being played over and over again with no relief in sight to relive them of the pain they are going through.

I was so anxious with some parts of this book that I wanted to skip ahead just to find out right away what would happen! (I didn’t of course…but this book had me on my toes!!)

Phebe was definitely different than the other women in this series. She was so broken and lost. She was so brainwashed! It was sad to read! They way they brought her up in the cult was just so heartbreaking. She never had a chance at having a normal life.

Oh man… AK story really, really broke my heart! He did something that he thought he could handle and it backfired on him. And he’s been living and dealing with the regrets of that decision he made so many years ago.

It takes a certain person to look past Phepe past. It’s a lot to deal with. Especially her past with men. But after reading this story AK was the right person for her. They understand each other on a level no on else could. They accepted everything about each other with no judgement. They were good together. They both healed each other and in the process found a part of themselves that they didn’t think they would ever have.

“It has never been like that before, not for me. This was different. I, with you, am different. I . . .”
“I am at peace.”

Towards the end of this book I had tears in my eyes. It was all just so much. This book definitely met all my expectations and more! I loved the bonus chapter! And I was happy to see who it was about!!! (I don’t want to give anything away!) but I can’t wait to read about that story!! And I loved how far Flame’s character has come! How he’s pushed himself here and there out of his comfort zone.

I’m so hooked on this series and I can’t wait for the next book in this series!!!

** this book is part of a series. I suggest you start at the beginning. If you were to start now. You would be lost!**

“Well?” Ky asked.
Tanner ran his hand over his head. The brother hadn’t attended one of our cookouts or slutfests in weeks. Not that he ever entertained himself with sluts—still too hard for his piece of pussy down in Mexico. He’d been busy trying to track down Meister. Unlike most of the white-power shit Tanner and Tank grew up with, this Meister was untraceable and off the grid. As much of a computer whizz kid as Tanner was, Meister was proving to be one slippery fucking snake to pin down.
“Gotta be honest, I didn’t think I was anywhere close to finding anything on this prick.” Tanner nodded toward Tank. “We knew of him, of course. I knew he had dealings with my father and uncle, just never met him myself. He’s Aryan Brotherhood, but works closely with the Klan. And there’s nothing on him. No email traces, no invoices, no texts. Nothing.”
I gritted my teeth and glanced at Styx, who was listening closely. Ky wasn’t originally gonna tell the prez about the plan to get Phebe, because of his fucking wedding, but that didn’t last long. Styx knew something was up with his VP. He read him like I read Flame and Vike. So Ky fessed up, and Styx was all for the plan. He’d had to push his wedding back by a month anyhow to get the pastor Mae wanted to conduct the ceremony, so he had time to kill.
“But you found something?” Ky translated as Styx signed.
Tanner sighed, the black circles around his eyes showing how hard the brother had been working. “I got something.” He shook his head, and my blood ran cold. I knew whatever he had found wasn’t good.
Tanner opened the file in front of him and threw a photograph toward the prez. Styx looked at it, then gave it to Ky. “Some middle-of-nowhere ghost town?”
Ky passed the picture around. Vike handed it to me, and I studied it. It was an aerial shot, and the picture was grainy, but from what I could make out, it was just a huge piece of land scattered with decrepit old buildings.
I passed the picture along. “Fucker owns this?”
Tanner faced me. “Yeah, or at least his father did. He’s dead now, but the deeds are still in his father’s name. Been in the family for decades. Took me a while to trace it.” He shook his head. “Meister is notorious among the Klan. Right, Tank?”
“Yeah,” Tank agreed. “Never met him either, but we’d all heard of him. Prick has been mobilizing for years for the race war they think is coming. Real serious, Oklahoma-City-bomb shit. From what we’ve heard, the guy has a one-track mind when it comes to advancing the white race. You think Hitler was fucked up? Well, imagine if he had a kid who was one built motherfucker, with a fucking carbon copy of his psycho mind; and you’ve got Meister. Fucker ain’t even German. Just wishes he was, spouting German phrases around like he’s born and bred Berlin. Delusional asshole.”
“This ain’t gonna be easy,” Tanner finished, looking at me, Vike, Flame, Hush and Cowboy. It was the five of us who had agreed to go looking for Phebe. Hush and Cowboy nodded at me to let me know they were still in.
“So he’s in this ghost town?” Ky asked, translating Styx’s sign language again. “If so, we’ll all just go in and get him, make the fucker talk and tell us where he’s got Phebe.”
Tanner sat forward. “He ain’t just living in the ghost town or hiding out. That’s where he has his enterprise.”
“Enterprise?” Ky echoed. It was his own question this time.
Tanner nodded. “From what I can tell, it’s a fucking brothel. Members of the Aryan Brotherhood, Klan, or Klan sympathizers, can go there for a night or a few days at a time.” Tank shifted uncomfortably next to him. “Ain’t sure, but I’m thinking it ain’t just getting your dick sucked and fucked. It’ll be real fucked-up shit. If Meister’s reputation is anything to go by, we would be walking into an organized, armed hellhole.” Tanner’s eyes darkened. “I get the Klan has a reputation for being full of backward rednecks. I ain’t gonna lie—growing up, most of my father’s cronies were that way. Thick as fuck and couldn’t do shit without screwing it up. Skinheads, lower-ranked soldiers, you know?”
“But there were some members that weren’t,” Tank continued. He cast an embarrassed glance at Tanner. “We weren’t, for starters.”
Tanner nodded. “It’s not the norm, but some of us were good. Smart, strong fighters, or just outright fucking psychos. The skinheads and rednecks are the foot soldiers. The likes of us, the likes of Meister, are the fucking SS. The planners, leaders, the generals—the ones who believe in the cause so much that they’re fucking lethal with what they’ll do, what they’re capable of. Meister is true Aryan Brotherhood; he’s preparing for war. He’s the real fucking deal.”
“And now he’s in our neck of the woods to stir up shit?” I asked.
Tanner nodded. “Comes from northern Texas. Never moved our way before. But the Klan are building day by day, joining forces with other white supremacist gangs—like the Brotherhood—and with the shit that’s on the news twenty-four-seven, blacks and whites at each others throats, he’s moved to the headquarters.” The brother’s jaw clenched. “To my father and uncle, who’ll be protecting him from being found out by the feds.” He sighed and ran his hand down his face. “From what I can figure out, this ghost-town brothel of his has only existed in the last year or so. He’s looking to fund something.”
“They ain’t dealing guns?” Cowboy drawled. “I thought that’s what Rider said the contract with the cult was for?”
“Rider was sure it was guns. At least it was when he was dealing with the Klan—it was all about arms. The Klan was selling them on and taking a cut.”
“His fucking twin,” Hush spat. “He changed the arrangement, didn’t he? When Rider was locked up in cult prison?”
“Think so,” Tanner said after a few seconds of silence.
“Then what the fuck are they dealing? What was Judah giving them if not Israeli guns?”
“Women.”

My hand cradled the back of his neck, holding him prisoner.I didn’t want him to look away, to move away.

I wanted him inside of me.

His eyes darkened and as if reading my mind, he moved back to pull his pants off. After grabbing a condom, and pulling it on, he came back and settled between my legs.

My arms went back around him, like returning to their home.

“Sam,” he murmured, tracing a finger down the side of my face. He tucked some hair behind my ear, and then I felt his lips against mine again.

Yes. Home.

That’s what this was.

I groaned, my head falling back, and I felt his soft chuckle against my skin, but then he reached down and shifted, lifting my leg until I wound it around his waist. He dipped in, shifting, and I felt him at my entrance. He paused, then slid inside.

My eyes closed and I relished the feel of him in me.

He began moving, thrusting inside of me.

As he kept going, and he slid his hands up my arms to capture my hands, I opened my eyes. We were staring back at each other, watching each other. I could feel him reaching inside of me, searching, claiming me. Everything in my body yearned for him, yearned for more. I wanted more. I needed more.

The second he touched me, everything blared alive. I was awakened. Always.

In and out. Mason kept thrusting.

My fingers clamped down over his, sinking deep as his pace quickened.

“Mason,” I gasped. Weak. His onslaught kept going, harder, faster. “I love you.”

He groaned, climaxing, and his body clenched as he thrust into me a last time. It sent me hurdling over the edge, and I wrapped both arms around his neck, hanging on.

A moment later, he brushed a soft kiss on my forehead before he slipped out.

I still lay beneath him.

I didn’t want to move.

I didn’t want him to move, and eventually, we slept like that.

I woke later, but I was still in his arms. He was curled up behind me, and I went back to sleep again. All the doubts and questions would be there tomorrow.

Chapter 1
The Diagnosis: “It’s menopause.”
Laughing. All the laughing. Until Doctor Beaufort looks at me like I’ve cracked. I stop myself and swallow. “Wait, what do you mean, ‘it’s menopause’?”
“Sophie, your symptoms and test results point to perimenopause. Your estrogen levels have been a little all over the place, and with your erratic cycle, it’s extremely likely that early menopause has begun.”
I’m glad I’m not drinking or eating because I would have choked. Oh, scratch that—I’m choking on my own spit. It’s so great that I don’t even need to put anything in my mouth to choke.
The studio audience in my head reacts on cue, complete with cheering and lewd gestures.
“I’m sorry?” I ask, my throat on fire as I cough roughly. I sound like a veteran smoker. Or maybe even like I’ve moved past that into voice box territory.
My doctor finally notices my insta-panic and waves her hands in front of her face. “That is to say it could be.”
I gasp, hacking up a lung for good measure and in hoping I heard her wrong. “But… I’m twenty-eight.”
This is where the audience supports my outrage with a sharp gasp followed by a dead silence.
Doctor Beaufort smiles, her teeth blindingly white next to her dark skin, but it does not comfort me. “I’m aware of your age,” she says with humor. “But I’m pretty sure this is premature menopause. It can hit women as young as their early twenties, though it’s rare.”
I stare at her, my mouth agape but still trying to form a word or two. All that comes out, though, is “buh buh buh… buhhh.”
For all the erratic and weird symptoms for the past six, maybe eight months, I never even considered this a possibility. Ever since I dumped that life-suck Brett, I blamed everything—from cycle woes to crazy unusual mood swings and a bout or three of awful night sweats—on stress and the breakup. Though the first missed period caused a different kind of nightmare. Or as my best friend Nora put it, The Pregnancy Panic Heard ’Round the World.
Dr. Beaufort is talking, but my brain is white noise. I’m forced to shake my head a bit to tune back in.
“Twenty-eight is certainly not common either but it’s not unheard of,” she continues, oblivious to my dumbstruck noises—or maybe because of them. “And it’s not immediate. As you probably know, menopause itself is a process. It can take years to complete itself. So you may still have time to have a child if that’s in your life plan! Many women going through menopause have a ‘oops’ baby.”
“Baby?” I ask, and I sound like I’ve never heard of them. I flash back to The Scare and for a quick second, wonder if that wouldn’t have been a blessing. Jesus, no. Then I’d be attached to Brett forever. I shudder. My credit score is still in the toilet because of him. That’s more than enough of a legacy and intrusion on my life.
My resulting silence stretches out before the both of us, but not because I have nothing to say or ask. It’s mostly because I find that I cannot speak.
“Sophie?” Dr. B begins, and I think she asks me a question, but it sounds like I’m underwater.
I have sudden trouble focusing and feel my body sway. The room leans into a cartwheel and everything goes black.

When I wake, I’m happy to find I did not, in fact, fall off the “spread and swipe” table after all. However, a nurse holds my legs up toward the ceiling. Dr. Beaufort hands me a paper bag.
“I’m not hyperventilating, Dr. B,” I murmur, pushing the bag away. I sound drunk. Great. Maybe I had a stroke, too? That would be a tasty cherry on top of this shit sundae. “I choked and then I freaked out.”
I’m well aware of my dramatic tendencies. At times. Occasionally. When it suits me.
“You passed out,” she says simply, no judgment. “Do you feel light-headed?”
I do a mental check. “I’m good.” Sitting up slowly and with assistance, I notice the nurse is my oldest friend in the world, Fox Monkhouse.
“What the fuck?” I try to kick him, but it comes across like the death throes of an extremely long, uncoordinated fish. “I’m commando, Fox! Shouldn’t there be a female nurse in here?”
The attempted kick seems even more foolish now. I pull my hospital gown tight in the back and slap my thighs together to hide my cooter.
“Mr. Monkhouse was just outside when you fainted. And he has a master’s in nursing,” Dr. B adds, unaware that I’m familiar with his qualifications. Even so, that doesn’t mean I want him all up in my lady biz. “He’s a professional.”
“Yeah, but a professional what is debatable,” I say.
He breaks into a huge grin.
Jerk. “What are you even doing here? You work at Shoreline!”
Fox rubs the corner of his eye with his middle finger. “Same hospital network,” he says, faux professionalism oozing everywhere. “They needed a floater today.” He makes an incredibly immature face behind Dr. Beaufort’s back as I try desperately not to crack up at “floater.” His immaturity rubs off too often for my own good. A few instances of which flit through my mind. The facial expressions that result are likely horrifying. I’m glad I cannot see my face right now.
“Are you all right, Sophie?” she asks, looking at me with concern. “I take it you and Fox are friends.”
I fake a cough and clear my throat. “Fine. And yes, I guess you could say we’re friends.”
Fox snorts, tucking a stray sun-kissed curl behind his ear. The rest of his shoulder-length blond hair is tied back. “I’ve known Sophie since we were… I’m not sure, five?”
“Four,” I correct, just to be a bitch. He rolls his eyes, and I smile. “When my family moved in down the block, I hadn’t started preschool yet.”
“Oh, right. We bonded over the ice-cream man.”
“Rocket Pops.”
“Ohh,” he moans, damn near orgasmically. Dr. Beaufort shoots him a look, but he’s not paying attention. “I loved those.”
“It’s basically frozen sugar and food coloring,” Dr. B throws in her two cents. “It’s—”
“Don’t crap on my childhood, Beaufort,” he snaps jokingly, but realizes his place with an “oh shit” expression. “I mean, yes, doctor. Sorry. Yes, of course. You are totally correct.”
The idiot pauses to clear his throat. I catch Dr. B minutely shake her head in what I assume is exasperation. I completely understand where she’s coming from. After an awkward beat, he picks up where he left off.
“Anyway, Sophie wouldn’t go to school unless I was in the same class. She needed me.”
“He was held back,” I add. “Started preschool at seven.”
Fox coughs, “Asshole!”
Dr. B rolls her eyes before looking at me. “I stand corrected on the professionalism. Are you feeling okay?”
“I’m good, Dr. B,” Fox says.
“I’m okay,” I say at the same time. At least, I’m okay where the fainting is concerned. The rest is still pretty sketchy.
“Good,” she says, eyeballing Fox with a sliver of a smile on her face. She pats me on the shoulder and tells me to get dressed. “We can chat more in my office before you go. Mr. Monkhouse, let the patient dress, please?”
“I will,” he says with a nod. She smiles as she walks out.
“Did you sleep with her? Or are you trying?” I ask him.
“I don’t shit where I eat,” he says.
“Oh, really?” My eyebrows jump for my hairline as my eyes drill into him my blatant disbelief.
“She’s twenty years older than me!”
I tilt my head, waiting. He’s holding out. He knows damn well he’s nailed a colleague or two well into their forties. Such as… “Rita?”
His mouth drops open, his dual-colored eyes going wide. Thanks to his scrubs, the green one shifts to blue-green or turquoise like the ocean and the hazel one looks golden. I still marvel at how strange yet beautiful they are.
“Wow, pulling out the stops,” he says. “Fine, I have cleaned up on the nurse aisle before, and a couple docs, but I’ve learned my lesson. It gets ugly.” He opens the door and stops. “Get dressed.”
I wait for him to close the door behind him before I peel off the gown and put on my clothes.
“Why’d you faint?” he asks when I get out into the hall. He’d clearly waited just outside.
I lightly punch his arm, noting a slight sunburn on his nose. Someone went surfing this morning and forgot his sunblock. “Don’t you have actual work to do, stalker?”
“Not at this very moment.” He looks around. “So what’s up? Are you okay?”
“Low blood sugar,” I lie. It feels gross, especially given his sincerity. I never lie to my best friends. “Forgot to eat this morning.”
“Forgetting to eat? That’s not like you.” Likely sensing my bullshit, he steps a little closer. “You’d tell me if something was wrong, wouldn’t you?”
I’m warmed by his concern, but I’m not yet ready to discuss anything. Time to redirect.
“Are you calling me fat, Monkhouse?” I like giving him shit. Not to mention, I’m quite comfortable in my own skin. At five foot nine, I’m pretty lanky with the exception of a bit of a bubble butt that popped out when I was in college.
“Always, Porky.”
An elderly woman walks by at that very moment. She stops to spit at him and expresses her extreme outrage on my behalf. “Horrible man! You want me to crush his man business?” she asks me, holding up her cane, which has flames painted on it.
“Um,” I stammer. I pretend to think about it while Fox’s eyes grow wide.
He purses his lips as if to say, “be serious!”
I turn back to my savior. “That’s very tempting, thank you. But I’m okay.”
“You’re sure?” Harley Quinn’s grandma doesn’t buy it, and is clearly looking to dole out a beatdown. Maybe she got bad news today, too.
“Totally.” Leaning toward her, I cup a hand by my mouth to offer an aside. “I have it on excellent authority that his dangle isn’t exactly swinging in the breeze, if you know what I mean.”
She nods knowingly and threatens Fox with her badass cane one more time before walking away.
“Wow,” I say after she turns the corner. “That was like tenth grade all over again.”
In high school, I struggled to keep on weight because my metabolism was pretty high. Some incredibly rude people called me “Rexy,” so Fox would call me “Chubs” in protest. He got in loads of trouble because the perceptive teachers of Bodhi Beach High assumed I was, in fact, anorexic and Fox was bullying me. Since the actual name-callers were girls, that slipped right under their radar. Fox, however, was loud and proud about it. It was a hell of a mess, but in the end, it was just my friend sticking up for me in his own poorly thought-out, controversial way, as per usual.
“I’ve never been threatened with the official cane of the Hells Angels before,” he says, wiping the spit off his scrubs.
“Go back to work,” I say with a giggle. “I’ll talk to you later.”
“You coming to the barbecue this Saturday?” he calls after me. “It’s my birthday, you know.”
“Wouldn’t miss it, old timer. Is the bonfire going to be legal this time?” I wink. Fox’s house is on the beach. It was his grandpa’s and he inherited it, the lucky prick.
“Of course not!” He rethinks his volume. “I mean, yes. Yes, it is. Bring beer. Oh, and is your brother coming?” he asks.
“You know, I haven’t talked to Cameron in a few. Seems like he’s been a little incommunicado, according to my mom. I don’t see how he’d miss it though.”
Fox nods. “Well, I hope he can make it! Tell him to come in drag because I want to motorboat him again. I don’t know where he got those falsies, but they were super comfortable to stick my face in.”
I perform the expected eye-roll followed by an about-face toward Dr. Beaufort’s office. “See you then, perv,” I call.
“Takes one to know one!”

After a more in-depth conversation with Dr. B, I’m not very good anymore. I may only have one good year of fertility if I want to conceive a baby without assistance. Or I could have five years, maybe more, but even that’s hard to say. Menopause is not only hard to predict, but makes my cycle erratic, which heavily lends to the odds against me. I thought I wanted kids but I’m hella single at present. It’s been eight months since I dumped Brett, and after that debacle, the “do I want kids” question is, well, questionable. With my new and the-opposite-of-improved timeline, I’m forced to address an issue I should have had more than a decade to consider.
Freezing some eggs is supposedly a legit option as I’m otherwise healthy and a good candidate for it. “But I wouldn’t wait,” Dr. B had said, stressing the point that I might not have very long to decide. “Think about it. You have a little time, but don’t think too long. Before you know it, it could be too late.”
I told her I didn’t have to think. I don’t have tens of thousands of dollars to plunk down on iced egg-os. Thanks to Brett’s bullshit and my stupid trusting heart, I loaned him the money to start his deejay business. I blame blind lust.
I ended up charging a bunch of stuff, which the imbecile sold for cash to blow at the bookie’s. Turned out, he didn’t want to start a business, just further a secret gambling habit. My credit took a nosedive along with our relationship. I’m still wading out of the debt he helped create and I have no money left to take out a hit. Where’s the justice?
I have my grandma’s 1967 Mustang convertible that’s worth a little money, but she’s not all original or in the greatest shape. I’d also need much deeper, unindebted pockets to pay for the work needed to make her a showstopper. I can’t imagine parting with it to pay shit off for my stupidity.
With all this on my shoulders, I sit in my not-very-cherry classic Mustang convertible in the parking garage and cry. And cry. And cry until I’m thoroughly dehydrated and have a mark from the steering wheel on my forehead. The setting sun is piercing directly through the structure when I come up for air.
It’s well past rush hour, and there shouldn’t be much in the way of gridlock left on the 405. So there’s that.
