THE NEW NOVEL FROM THE #1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE THIS MAN TRILOGY AND ONE NIGHT TRILOGY!

People think they have Camille Logan nailed: daddy’s girl; beautiful, spoiled young woman with her father’s bank balance to fund her lifestyle. But Camille is determined to have a life free from his strings. Out on her own, she’s made mistakes, including one that found her clawing her way back after a stint in rehab and plenty of bad press. Now, after fighting so hard to be independent and happy, she finds her life threatened as a result of her father’s ruthless business dealings. Caught between resentment and fear, Camille prepares herself for the measures her father will take to protect her. But nothing could prepare her for the ex-SAS sniper who crashes into her life.

Jake Sharp resides in his own personal hell. He was distracted from duty once before, and the consequences were devastating–both personally and professionally. He vowed never to let that happen again. Accepting the job of bodyguard to Camille Logan isn’t the kind of distraction from his demons he should take. Women and Jake don’t mix well, yet protecting the heiress seems the lesser of two evils. But Jake soon discovers that she isn’t the woman she’s perceived to be. She’s warm, compassionate, her presence settling, and his duty to protect her soon goes deeper than a well-paid job, no matter how hard he fights it. He needs absolution. He comes to need Camille. But he knows he can’t have both.

This book piqued my interest early into the story and kept me on my toes the whole way through. The Protector by Jodi Ellen Malpas is fueled by mystery and suspense; elements which I hadn’t expected to drive the plot line. This was a refreshing change to what I’ve come to presume based on the author’s past works. The newness of these components had my heart beating precariously fast and my need to find out what would happen next was greedy. Jake’s secrets and the danger that threatened Camille all worked for me. These were the highlights of this book because they kept me curious and excited for what was to come. So it came as a startling shock when I found myself unable to fully find myself lost in the romance. There were many times where I found that part of the story line stutter, lacking the seamless feel that I fell so head over heels in love with in Malpas’ This Man series. So while the words were written to describe a powerful and instant love connection between Jake and Camille, that connection didn’t quite draw me in as I had so wanted it to.

It cannot be denied that this author knows exactly what she’s doing when writing her alpha males. She succeeded in this because Jake Sharp embodied alpha male. I loved his commanding energy. He oozed power and strength, not giving a second thought as to who he may hurt in order to protect Camille. The safety and security he provided Camille definitely left a soft spot for me. It was during these moments when he’d just scoop her up in his arms and times when keeping her safe drove him to insanity that I finally felt my heart flutter. Those bits and pieces made me crave more. Camille Logan’s life on the outside looks like a dream. One that interlopers could only wish to have. But for Camille, actually living it isn’t everything it’s made up to be. Having a controlling, tyrant as a father, her decisions aren’t really hers to be made. What I loved about her character most was her independence. She wanted to break away from her father’s hold, wanting so badly to make a life for herself. It isn’t until threats are made against her due to her father’s reckless actions that Jake comes barreling into her life and it isn’t until Jake that her life finally begins to settle the way Camille had always dreamed her life would be. I was happy for her, happy for the direction she chose for herself.

The Protector wasn’t what I presumed it would be. I loved being embroiled in the thrill and the suspense and enjoyed the book in general but I personally felt like it was missing Ms. Malpas’ signature “in your face” romance, the sort that leaves you breathless and unable to take control of the bajillion electrifying sparks that fly off of the pages. Overall, I thought this was a solid book. If you’re looking for a heart pounding romantic suspense, this one is definitely the one for you.
