BOOK REVIEW: Sustained by Emma Chase

Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with a brand new funny, romantic, sexy story!

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that—that, I know how to do.

I absolutely loved, Sustained by Emma Chase. A story packed full of romance, LOL comedy, and an endless amount of endearing moments. This book just made me feel happy and satisfied. Definitely the best in the series so far, I’d even go as far as to say that Drew Evans (Twisted series) has got himself some serious competition with Jake. I adored not only Jake but also the charming, selfless heroine Chelsea. A dream female lead in my opinion. Alongside the main protagonists are a bunch of amazing secondary characters all under the age of 20. I couldn’t have been more happy with the storyline of this book—it was pleasantly unexpected and refreshing.

I was in rapt attention from the very start and of course knew that I was going to be left unable to put the book down. How I wish I could have dragged on their story more and continue to ride this joyous high I found myself in. The dialogue between all the characters fell so easily; without any boring gaps just to fill the pages. It was like, every scene and every back and forth banter mattered and everything fell into place at the right time.

The draw and connection I had with Chelsea and Jake was as instantaneous as their chemistry for one another. The “hottie tottie” scenes we just that—HOT! Not only was it hot but it was also so ridiculously sensual, I found myself pulled into their most intimate moments, craving the same intensity. The need and the hunger they had for one another was blazing through the pages. I just loved how the author took her time to get them into that moment. Again, everything had its time and its place. I think that the power behind their intense chemistry was fueled by events that led up to it. A friendship and respect that had been formed before just made “the moment” that much better. There were times in this book where my heart just about gave out on me, there were angry and heartbreaking tears that I knew Jake would have to make up for in tenfold—which he does. J This book had it all and I do wish I could experience it all over again for the very first time. Guess, I’ll just have to hope that Brent’s story will keep the momentum going. But for now, a re-read is most definitely in store in the near future.

Sustained will sustain your fiction addiction for hours and it will leave you missing all of the characters in the book. Emma Chase gave us something really special. She’s given us a set of characters that will find their way burrowed at the deepest recesses of your heart and she gives us a love story which I feel is worthy of a film adaptation. This book is way too good to be missed and has my bookshelf worthy stamp of approval.
