When handsome California surf god Lincoln Savage suddenly rolls into Ocean Beach like a rogue wave, shy beauty Simone Bianchi’s foundation is shaken. No longer under the thumb of her domineering father, she’s made a simple quiet life for herself and her fluffy fourteen pound Havanese pup running a surf shop in her hometown of OB. Long ago she gave up her dreams for a future with Linc.
But now the notorious lead singer of the Dirt Dogs has returned, and Simone is reluctant to admit that she’s still vulnerable to his killer dimpled smile and easy charm. She finds that although she’s stowed away the mementos, it hasn’t been as easy to erase the memories of their epic summer love.
It seems he hasn’t forgotten, either.
Is the recording contract he’s offering merely a pretense?
Or does he have something more in mind?
Does he really believe that they can just pick up where they left off, despite all the bad luck and heartache?
And is she willing to risk everything again for one last chance at love?
“Dammit, Mona.” I leaned in closer inhaling her sweet scent and nearly brought to my knees with desire. I wanted to have her. Right here. Right now. I had to curl my fingers into fists to keep from reaching out, grabbing her and reminding her how it used to be between us. Her lids lowered and her breathing turned ragged. Was she remembering, too, or trying to forget?
“Go away, Linc.” Apparently the latter.
“Maybe I can’t,” I admitted my voice raspy with stripped down need. “Maybe I don’t want to.”
“Don’t.” She closed her eyes and her chin dropped. “Don’t do this to me.” She wet her lips. They visibly trembled. Even though I knew I had upset her I still wanted to kiss them. “I’m not one of your groupies easily flattered by your bullshit. The fact that you’re a big rock star doesn’t impress me. I know who you really are Lincoln Savage. I’ve seen you at your best and I’ve survived you at your worst. So don’t think you can come here and play games with me.”
Melanie’s 5-COWABUNGA Stars Review:
COWABUNGA!!! Michelle Mankin’s Outside was the perfect wave! I blazed through this book in a matter of hours without any hope of putting my Kindle down.
You know how people say that it only takes a few seconds to know if you want to kiss someone? Well, I felt the same exact way with this book. I knew just from those first few paragraphs that this was a story that I was going to love. And if I could kiss it I would have peppered it with endless smooches.
Outside was exceptionally written, well versed, perfectly paced, and had such likeable characters that made up a heartwarming and touching love story. Simone, the heroine of Outside hit such a chord with me. She had a genuine aura around her; free spirited but entirely vulnerable at the same time. Michelle Mankin did an amazing job on developing her character through the years that span in this book and even more, the author gives us such a complex yet believable hero in Lincoln Savage. This guy was in nowhere near perfect—his insecurities battled against his protective nature when it came to Simone because he loved her so intensely. There was a specific scene in this book that took me on a tail spin and my goodness did I hate him at that moment. A scene that had my stomach churning and my heart breaking apart at the same time. I was so grief stricken I literally felt sick to my stomach. For an author to be able to evoke such strong and candid emotions from her readers—I’d say Michelle Mankin hit the nail right on the head and has just gained a lifetime fan out of me.
I love the way this book is broken down into separate parts because it gave me an insight to the characters in certain stages of their lives and also showed just how strong the love that Lincoln and Simone had for one another; even though it spanned over a course of 15 years that undeniable love remained just as strong and even more desperate over the years they spent apart. The here and now made me feel just how affected Simone and Lincoln were from their broken past and how much they both still held on to one another even separated for those 15 years. The flashback to their past was so electric, I was giddy to the core. I loved, loved how they instantly fell for one another; their connection came naturally that it was easy to fall into step right along with them.
Outside was a surprising must read for me. I always get ridiculously excited when I find a new author who becomes an instant “one-click” because their work was just THAT GOOD! Second chance romances are one of my addictions and Michelle Mankin proves through her abundantly hypnotizing story telling that a second chance at love can bring sincere redemption with an agonizingly beautiful happy ending.
