Today’s premiere New Adult authors combine their talents to tell four original stories from inside one house.
When four girls decide to live off campus together as juniors at a college in Michigan, they expect it to be their best year yet. Little do they know, it’s a year that will change the rest of their lives.
BEHIND HER EYES by A.L. Jackson
Unable to live down her ex-boyfriend’s deception, Misha is determined to avoid betrayal. When, the new guy next door, Darryn starts to get under her skin, her defenses start to crumble. But trusting Darryn seems impossible, especially if he’s not sure he can trust himself.
In AL Jackson’s Behind Her Eyes, she took my emotions from zero to boiling within the first minute of the first page. I felt the steam filling me to the top of my head, quickly releasing out of my ears. I swear, I have never felt such anger and disgust so early in the game. I HATED Hunter, LOATHED his actions, and my heart squeezed so tightly for Misha. As soon as I turned that first page, I was already raising my arms above my head in praise of AL Jackson’s choice for her storyline. Misha’s struggle is something that our generation now faces, with so many headlines of it on both celebrity and local news on a constant basis yet something that no one has done. It was definitely refreshing for me as an avid reader to finally have a different taste touch my literary palate.
Misha Crosse in my opinion, is AL Jackson’s most real heroine. She is perfectly flawed, definitely a character that readers could easily identify with. I am used to AL sculpting that “perfect” heroine in her books… Those that face challenges and devastation could still be so sure of themselves. Misha however didn’t fall in that category for me. I really saw how hard she was on herself; self-destruction at its best. So much of her in this book is second guessing herself which is truly driven by how much she blames herself. I wasn’t sure how to deal with it because I was taken outside of my AL Jackson element and of course something different and new always causes a stir within me. Quite a few times in the beginning of the book, I found myself gravitating away from her out of sheer frustration from the merry-go-round internal dialogues she kept having with herself. I wanted her to act on her issues, wanted her to somehow break away and find a solution instead of turning a blind eye. But you know what? I slowly and then very quickly understood her. I expected WAY TOO MUCH, WAY TOO SOON and this is why AL Jackson is an incredible writer. It is because she takes all her characters on a journey; unrushed and deeply. Misha is young and she is naive. For one person to have undergone so much in her young life, I was inspired by the direction she was choosing to take herself in.
Darryn Wild DROVE ME WILD and CRAZY good!!! And though I have to say for the record that my heart still belongs to a certain beautiful broken boy *ahem Jared, ahem*, Darryn is like that tall, ice cold, glass of water looking you in the face during a scorching afternoon– condensation and all! That when you take that first gulp down, you can’t get enough of and you keep going and going knowing full well that brain freeze would be the ultimate price to pay. Well, let me tell you… I will take thousands of brain freeze moments over one night with this man!!! Again, AL Jackson surprised me by throwing this hot as sin, sweet as a sack of sugar, book boyfriend right straight into my heart (and girly parts). I absolutely LOVED how confident and how well put together his character was. So refreshing from the expected brooding hero we are so used to seeing from this author. Darryn was one of the highlights of my week. I was crazy grinning from ear to ear every single time he uttered both sweet reassuring and sexy dirty words to Misha. I was a pawn to his every move. Hook, line, and sinker— I refuse to believe that this short story is the end of him because he is deserving of much, much more. I NEED to know so much more of who he is. So here’s my plea, AL Jackson. 🙂
Misha and Darryn’s journey together is truly a roller coaster. I absolutely loved this short story, I thought AL did a great job with delving into such a heavy topic and giving us such different character types, adding that level of complexity. I do wish that she takes their story further as I thought this was a fabulous introduction to a story that has so much left to tell. And how do I know that? Because the ending didn’t leave with fulfilled with closure; what it left me with is hunger. A hunger to see how their relationship grows, to gain a deeper understanding of Darryn’s character, and to finally see that full fledge, confident woman that Misha has finally realized she is.
SAVING ME by Molly McAdams
On the outside, Indy is always ready for a party—but inside she’s breaking. Kier makes a weekly routine of saving the girl next door from herself on Saturday nights… but when will she be ready to remember him on Sunday morning?
Molly McAdams has such a genuine gift of being able to write funny, light hearted scenes amidst a heavily loaded emotional storyline. I am so amazed at how she does this because not many can. What becomes of this is that readers like myself find themselves thoroughly engrossed and entertained from top to bottom. Where I am laughing one minute and crying the next. She makes me into a crazy person. But truly, I think this allows readers to fully comprehend the many layers of her characters. They become your friend and many times one sees so many similarities to themselves. I can attest to that.
In Saving Me, it is no different. Indy’s story is a loaded gun just ready to be fired and when that trigger is pulled, so will your heart strings.
Indy with a fiery mass of red hair on her head and a personality to boot had me loving her every minute of this book. Having lived behind the shadow of someone who means dearest to her, always playing second fiddle her entire life, she has developed a sort of “I’m never good enough” complex and really, who could blame her? Much of the book is us seeing Indy quickly down the long and narrow path to self-destruction. My heart broke for what she goes through. But it’s when she find herself at the lowest point that she begins to pick up the pieces with the help from someone whom she never expected.
Kier is undeniably sweet and so mysteriously sexy. The way he romances Indy has a hint of Cyrano de Bergerac minus the big nose and the incest. LOL. Kier keeps to himself and is the strong silent type for reasons that had my head shaking and telling myself “no no no… no way.” What I loved about the romance that brewed between these two was that Kier was a man of actions. He took care of Indy in ways she has never experienced before. That filled my heart whole as she was so deserving of it for so long.
Saving Me was a great, fast read that held me prisoner. I couldn’t shut off my Kindle for the night until I finished and when I did, you can bet I had a huge grin on my face as I fell into dreamyland.
FOULING OUT by Tiffany King
Working at a sports bar, Courtney has become a pro at sidestepping propositions from arrogant jocks—which makes her a more elusive catch for campus basketball star Dalton than he expected. But when he falls for the saucy waitress, Dalton will have to rethink his game plan to prove he’s not the jerk Courtney expects.
Omg!!! Fouled Out was just exactly what I needed! I so, so, so enjoyed Courtney and Dalton’s story so very much!!! (Did I get enough “so” in there?!)
This is my first ever read from Tiffany King and it won’t be the last. As soon as Fouled Out ended, I jumped right for my laptop to begin following this author and researching more books she’d published. Tiffany’s writing flowed incredibly well, the characters were beyond likable, the dialogue witty and all so sexy at the same time and the flirty feel made me into a giddy grade school girl. I loved the innuendos and the sexual tension that sizzled around Courtney and Dalton. I couldn’t stop smiling during the entire time.
What really worked so well was the storyline this author chose for a short story. She didn’t delve into anything extreme where the reader like myself would be left more denied than fulfilled. This light hearted, romantic comedy was the perfect addition to this compilation. Court(ney) which by the way I thought was a great play on the whole basketball storyline– was a kick ass heroine. I loved how honest she was about her superficial insecurities, cause let’s be honest, we all do. But she didn’t let them dilapidate her. That was awesome to see in a female protagonist. And Dalton, oh my goodness he was a sweet one. An athlete with a tender heart and he just did me in! I loved that he was a man of action with the added bonus of the much sought after quality– a great sense of humor. They really did make a great pairing.
I am very much looking forward to reading more from Tiffany King because the little taste I’ve had so far has left a delicious after taste and cravings for much more.
BENEATH YOUR LAYERS by Christina Lee
In order to ace her fashion internship, Chloe must team up with local college dropout and set builder, Blake—much to her chagrin. But after some “hands-on” experience, Chloe will have to ask herself if Blake factors into her carefully laid plans…
The sexual tension between Chloe and Blake was so intense I could see the fibers of the proverbial rope ripping apart because it’s wound so tightly.
Chloe’s uptight, snobby demeanor can easily turn off people from her when they initially meet her but when you get past the surface, you see someone vulnerable who is trying to find her way through life. With the building pressure of having her mom live through her vicariously, Chloe doesn’t allow nonsense in her life. Each decision is so meticulously put together, she leaves no room for anything spontaneous. But when spontaneity comes in the form of a sexy, rough, and artistic male specimen by the name of Blake, Chloe’s carefully laid out plans quickly take a different turn; the road less traveled but undoubtedly much more exciting.
This was my first ever Christina Lee book and I will say that I liked the way she built the story around her characters. I could definitely feel the heat between Chloe and Blake which is even hotter coming from polar opposites. I thought that the whole ‘truth or dare’ play was cleverly done even if a tad predictable. What I do wish for was some closure for Blake’s issues as I felt that was swept under the rug for the sake of ending their story; so it felt abrupt in the end for me. Where Chloe got closure but Blake missed that chance.
All in all, I enjoyed this quick, romantic read and I’d definitely pick up another one of this author’s work in the future!
Where to buy:
Behind Her Eyes by AL Jackson-
Now I could feel him, his eyes all over me, caressing me slowly, up and down. I let all my insecurities drift away as I swayed in time to the music, in sync with the throb of the crowd and the intermittent lights that glowed against my lids.
A charged moment passed, before strong hands found my hips and gripped them from behind. For a beat, I stiffened, before I again gave in to this sublime release. And again, he felt good.
All this intense energy that ricocheted between us wrapped me up in a frenzy of nerves, alight and alive. The smell of him took me whole, all soap and man and sex.
My heart beat frantically, racing to keep up with my thoughts that were spiraling out of control. A shimmer of fear slithered through me, before he pulled my back into the safety of his firm chest. And that was what I felt.
With him, and I didn’t know why, and I was searching inside myself for resolve, for the commitment I’d made to never allow myself to be so easily played again. But it was just out of my reach.
Darryn held me close, our bodies moving in time, like we shared the same breath, the same space.
I leaned back, my head on his shoulder as his face found the curve of my neck. Chills sped, spinning my body into a violent cataclysm of need. He let his hands roam, palms pressing hard as he ran them down the front of my legs, spanning them wide as he trailed them back up to my hips and over my stomach.
Fingertips dipped into my ribs as he slid them up the curve of my sides, and he lifted my arms as he went, in the same fluid motion fastening my hands around the back of his neck.
All those butterflies scattered, a clash of discordant wings that fluttered haphazardly through my insides, leaving my stomach in a coiled mess of confusion and need.
Why him? Why now?
Holding me close, he brushed his mouth over the shell of my ear, his whispered words injected directly to my manic heart. “Goddamn, Misha. What are you trying to do to me?”
I suddenly found it impossible to breathe, because it was him who was slowly undoing all the fibers of reservation woven through my weakened spirit.
“Can’t get you off my mind.” He leaned in closer, his hand sweeping up my stomach. Fingers brushed between my breasts, and I released a sharp gasp.
“Been dying to touch you,” he murmured low.
Saving Me by Molly McAdams-
“I’m about to embarrass the hell out of myself, but I don’t care anymore. I feel like when I’m near you, I’m safe, and it makes no sense to me. It is the weirdest feeling to have with someone I only know three things about.”
My eyebrows rose at that and I turned to fully face her. “Three?”
“Yes. Three things. Your name is Kier, you’re extremely quiet, and you are the biggest puzzle I’ve ever tried to figure out.”
“I’m the puzzle?”
“Yes!” she said in exasperation.
That had to have been the most backward statement I’d ever heard. “And why am I a puzzle?”
“Because of what I just told you. I don’t know you, you don’t even talk to anyone, and I feel safe when you’re near me! Why is that? I feel like I’m going crazy because all I’ve been able to think about for these past two weeks is you, and how every time you open your mouth it’s like déjà vu, and I just— I don’t know what’s happening.” Her green eyes were massive and she looked like she was on the edge of losing her shit.
I took a few steps toward her and lowered my voice. “Calm down, Indy. You’re fine.”
“I just don’t understand,” she said loudly, the pitch of her voice rising. “Do you believe in past lives?” she asked suddenly. I paused, a laugh slipping past my lips. “I’m sorry, what?” “Past lives? Like that whole stupid YOLO saying is really just bullshit, because we’re about to get another shot down the road?”
I tried to contain my smile, but she was really fucking adorable when she was like this. “What does that have to do with what you’re freaking out over?”
“In stories with soul mates they find each other no matter what in every life. And it’s like they have a weird connection they can’t explain.” I closed the distance between us and dropped my head so I was looking directly into her eyes.
“Are you saying we’re soul mates?”
“No!” she said, horror lacing her voice, her cheeks filling with heat.
“I think you were,” I teased.
“I wasn’t, I was just saying that in stories . . . I don’t know what I’m saying, okay? But I don’t get what’s going on with us!”
“So now there’s an us?”
“Oh my God,” she whispered. “I need to stop talking.”
I laughed and took a step back. “I’m teasing you, Indy. And no, I don’t believe in past lives. I think we have this one, and that’s it.” She sighed, and her body visibly relaxed. When she spoke again, she sounded exhausted—and in a way, defeated. “I don’t, either, but I can’t figure out how to explain this feeling like I know you.” I ground my jaw for a few seconds as her green eyes held mine. “Because maybe you do know me. You’re just not ready to remember why.”
Beneath Your Layers by Christina Lee-
I motioned for the bar. “Want me to get you a soda or a water?”
Chloe stared at me for another long moment before she said, “No, thanks.”
We listened to the next song quietly standing beside each other, lost in our own thoughts. Until she turned to me and said, “Truth or dare?”
“Dare,” I said, almost breathless. Given her mood, maybe she’d give me something good this time.
“Your turn, Blake,” she said. “Do something spontaneous.”
My fingers trembled from wanting to touch her so badly and all I could think about was doing just that.
“You sure that’s what you want?” I said, turning and backing her against the wall.
“Yes,” she breathed out.
“Something spontaneous or something I’ve been thinking about doing for days?” I said, my lips coming closer to hers. “Maybe weeks?”
Her breath caught. “It . . . it’s your call.”
My head swung forward, our foreheads practically touching. Fluttery breaths were escaping her lips. I place my arms on either side of her head and she bit down on her lip.
My heart thrashed in my chest and all I could think about was how desperate I was to kiss her, but how nervous I was to blow this opportunity. So I attempted to read her signals and they were definitely mixed. Her eyes flitted between panic and lust. When I pinned my hip against hers, I could’ve sworn I heard a low moan in the back of her throat.
“Please,” she rasped out. “Please . . . don’t . . . Blake.”
My stomach was in my throat. Fuck, either I’d scared her or I’d been reading her wrong. I leaned back to give her space, but her fingers suddenly skimmed across my waist, clenching my shirt and drawing me nearer.
“Don’t what?” I asked in confusion. She was so fucking messing with my head.
“Don’t . . .” She was panting now. “Don’t stop.”
Fouling Out by Tiffany King-
The warmth inside the building was soothing after walking from the car outside. I felt mildly disappointed when Dalton dropped his arm from my shoulders, until he reached for my hand. As we strolled along, I became hyperaware of how something as innocent as handholding could become somewhat erotic while sipping wine together. Dalton slid his thumb across the top of my hand in slow methodical strokes before gently caressing my pulse point. The hairs on the back of my neck felt as if they were standing on end. Each sweep of his thumb was a sensual dance with my sensitive skin, making it tingle.
It was becoming apparent to me that it might have been a bad call on my part to skip lunch. Between the scent of Dalton’s cologne and the alcohol I was consuming, I was already feeling slightly intoxicated. I nibbled on a few cubes of cheese to attempt to alleviate the buzzing in my head. Dalton’s breath teased my neck, making me shiver in a good way. I should have put some distance between us so I could regain my bearings, but instead I snuggled closer to him, wishing we were somewhere else with a lot fewer people around.
All the air escaped my lungs as Dalton slowly captured a bead of wine from my bottom lip with his finger. I watched with bated breath as he moved the finger to his own mouth, sucking the drop of wine. It was all I could do not to moan as my insides turned to putty.
“You need to stop looking at me like that,” Dalton murmured in my ear.
“Like what?” I licked the rest of the wine off my lip with the tip of my tongue.
This time it was Dalton who groaned softly. Placing his hands on my hips, he slowly backed me into a dim corner, away from prying eyes. “Like you’re thinking how great it would feel if I hoisted you up on that wine barrel table over there with your legs wrapped around my waist.”
“Are you sure that’s not you thinking that?” My hips responded almost instinctively as he pulled me snugly against his body. I could feel him, rock hard, pressed to my stomach. The wanting desire I had been keeping at bay from the moment he showed up at my house looking practically delectable with low-riding jeans and a black V-neck sweater that accentuated his well-toned chest was threatening to explode.

“You stole my fuckin’ drugs.”
The foot at my throat presses me further into the cold, scratchy pavement. I gasp, my fingers clawing at fleshy ankles. His skin doesn’t budge; my nails are too short to break the flesh that I’m so desperately scraping at. It does nothing to move him, or send him on his way. Instead, he pushes harder, cutting off more of my air supply.
“That’s not exactly how it went down,” I croak, struggling.
“You were meant to deliver them; instead you fuckin’ sold them, and ran with the money.”
He’s right about that. I did take the drugs and sell them. I had good reason—my boyfriend was in trouble, and I was doing anything I could to get him out of trouble. I didn’t think ahead. I didn’t realize that I’d then owe a very unhappy drug dealer money. Not my finest moment, that’s for damned sure.
“I had no choice . . . I was helping someone I care about.”
He presses his boot down further into my throat, and my air supply narrows down to a dangerous level. My head pounds as the blood and oxygen are cut from my brain.
“I bet that person ain’t here helpin’ you tonight, now, are they?”
No, he’s right about that. Samuel is probably sleeping with someone else. The moment his debt was cleared, he left me. The dirty, cheap fucker left me. Now I’m dealing with the backlash. A furious drug dealer who wants his money.
Money I don’t have.
“Don’t I get,” I gasp, “one chance to get your money?”
He glares down at me through angry grey eyes. I squirm again as my vision starts flittering in and out. Shit, I’m going to pass out and he’s probably going to kill me, or worse, drag my helpless body away to do God knows what with.
“I have m-m-m-money,” I croak.
“If you had money, you wouldn’t have stolen my drugs.”
“I . . .” God, I’m on the edge. “I can get it. I s-s-s-swear.”
He stares at me, and for each second he does, my vision swims. Then, much to my relief, he lifts his boot off and reaches down, hurling my weak body up. He pulls me close, so close that our noses touch. My knees wobble and I have to push all my focus into not falling flat on my face and giving him another chance to take me.
“Listen, and listen fuckin’ good. You’ve got two weeks, and trust me, that’s me bein’ fuckin’ generous. Get my money, or I come for you.”
“Don’t try and run. You do, I’ll fuckin’ find you.”
I close my eyes, take a deep, burning breath and nod again.
Then he’s gone.
And I know . . . I just know . . . I’m in deep, deep shit.

That is, until he’s fixed up with Peter, the local bartender in Jeremy’s favorite watering hole in the East Village. Peter is hot, sweet, sensitive and…masterful. Peter brings out a side of Andrew he never knew he had. And he can’t get enough. However, the same difficulties Andrew had with Jeremy threaten to rear up and ruin his chances with Peter. Will Andrew love Peter enough to let himself have the one guy in the world who could be meant for him?
Even Pete’s 2 appearances in Meant For Each Other. Kind of gave me an idea of him. I thought he would have played a bigger roll in the first book. Being he sexy bartender and all…
but, nope… we hear nothing else from him. So, I was kind of shock that he was the love interest of Andrew in this book.
I mean… I knew they were attracted to each other in the first book… When Andrew went into the bar to getaway and talk about his failing relationship with Jeremy. It was like 2 minute conversation.
It didn’t make sense to me. He was more or less like Jeremy in pay and job wise.
The reason why Andrew and Jeremy didn’t work out was because they grew apart. That was Jeremy main thing…. That and money.
I would think in this book that Andrew would get a person more Compatible with him. With pay and job.
I’m sorry… But Pete didn’t fit the bill for me. Yes he went to school…got a degree in business. But at the end of the day… He’s still a bartender.
Andrew is a young guy coming out of long term relationship. Coming from a not so wealthy family…Andrew worked hard to get where he is today. He has the perfect job…the perfect condo. And all that’s missing is the perfect man to spend his day’s and night’s with.
I felt for Andrew. It seemed like to me…even though he wasn’t happy with Jeremy. He was living in the past. Through out the book…he kept comparing or reminiscing about Jeremy. It was kind of getting old… I mean…I got it… He made mistakes. I just felt like… He needed to get over it and move on…
He was a good guy… I can’t say anything bad about him. He was straight forward. Had some hiccups about his career. But overall… He was a good guy…and good to his friends.
I was struggling with this book a little bit. The way the author was describing Andrew. And the way he described how he spent his money & how he wore his clothes… Was just too much. That’s one of my pet-peeves in books… I think it’s filler when an author describes what everyone wears. And how they wear it.
Also too… I was struggling with the overly description and details of everything. How Peter and Andrew worked out.. How they looked… What the whole workout routine was. And how they did it. And how fabric felt against their skin.
It was all overkill of descriptions/ details. I mean… I really had to look past all that to get to the story.
Oh man… And the internal thinking…it was a bit too much for me…
It was just getting to me.
I needed more story… Less of all the other stuff.
Overall…. looking past all the details and descriptions … I liked the story…

D.H. Starr is a product of the 80s who should have grown up in the 60s and wishes he could travel through time to visit the Ancient Romans and Greeks so he could wear togas and be considered in-style. He loves to torment his characters before giving them their happy ending, enjoying the way they struggle and change from beginning to end. On his off-time, he can be found parading naked through the woods, searching for mystical creatures who he swears do exist. Once he finds the portal to their world that will be the last you see of him. His favorite quote comes from the musical Rent, “No day but today” and he loves the song Seasons of Love because its message is so true.
