When you meet that one person in the world meant for you… you should hold onto them.

Olivia Bannon walked away.

Twice.

When 17-year-old Livy meets Ethan, she can’t deny their inexplicable connection. Lost in his dark, intense eyes and smile-to-die-for, Livy never thought she would feel like this. It almost makes her want to break her childhood vow, but Livy knows happily ever after is just an illusion, and despite her heart wanting Ethan, her head is telling her to stick with the plan. The one that doesn’t include falling in love. Period.

Eight years later, Livy finds herself back in her hometown. After the way she left things, the last time they were together, Livy is anxious about seeing Ethan again. It shouldn’t come as shock to discover he has finally moved on—but it hurts. A lot. Accepting that she will never get the chance to put things right isn’t easy, but it’s not until life comes crashing down around her that Livy realizes what she could’ve had. Left broken, alone, and depressed, only one person can pull her out—the guy she thought she’d pushed away one too many times.

Livy has finally realized that you can’t fight fate… Some things are just meant to be. Is this finally her time to get it right, or has Livy missed her last chance with Ethan?

excerpt

“Liv, what’s going on? Is she okay? Keefer told me what went down.”

I moved away from the door and met Ethan halfway. “No, she isn’t okay.” It came out bitter.

“Can I do anything? I could come-”

I shook my head. “We’re fine, thanks.” Without realizing I stepped back and Ethan’s face paled.

“And us?”

My eyes dropped to the floor.

“Liv, look at me. What. About. Us?”

I forced myself to look at him. My head and heart were at war. My heart wanted him to wrap me in his arms and tell me everything was going to be okay. That Amber would heal. That Sharn would meet her Prince Charming. That we really did have something. But my head knew better. My head would always know better.

“There is no us. I’m sorry, Ethan. Goodbye.” I turned from him and fled back to the limo.

“You’re running from me, Liv. Don’t use this as an excuse to run,” he called out.

Once in the safety of the limo, I slammed the door behind me, ignoring Sharn’s questioning glare.

“How is she?”

“A mess. This will leave scars.” Sharn answered.

I leaned my head onto the backrest and pressed a finger to my lips, trying to remember what kissing Ethan felt like. Was it even real? It didn’t feel real. Not now. It felt like a dream—the really good kind, until you wake up and realize it was just that.

A dream.

Because in the harsh light of day, life wasn’t like that. It was hard—full of hurt and people who let you down.

No, life wasn’t like a dream at all.

Synopsis:
Being pulled in different directions, Amara must choose what she wants to believe and whom she’ll trust.

EXCERPT:

“Holy shit,” she breathed when she looked at the four women standing in front of her. Courtney wasn’t kidding when she’d said Philip collected lookalikes. All of them looked like Amara. Not identical, but enough that a person who didn’t know her could confuse them or think they were sisters. They all had dark, straight hair that reached their elbows, a couple had layers like hers, and the others were cut the same length. Their bodies were all thin like Amara, although with slight variation in the hip area.

“You must be Amara,” one of them said, speaking up.

“I am,” she said, uneasily. “Isn’t it against code to use real names?”

The girl laughed. “What am I supposed to call you? Jasmine?”

“Yes,” she responded slowly.

“Okay, Jasmine, I’m Jasmine.”

Amara’s brows furrowed. “For real?”

“All of our Méchant names are Jasmine for the night.”

“What?”

The girl shrugged. “That’s what they told us. We’re all wearing the same thing; we’re all standing the same way, and using the same make-up.”

“But how will… Okay,” Amara said, blinking rapidly. She reminded herself she had this one last thing to do before she was free.

They all dressed in threads of fabric, artfully shredded, tiny black shirts that left little to the imagination and similar skirts, barely covering the panties beneath. Before long, Vivienne appeared at the door, much to Amara’s surprise.

“It’s been a long time,” Vivienne said with a smile when she spotted Amara. Amara nodded in response, still gaping at her.  She noticed  pairs of handcuffs that Vivienne held in her hands.

“Okay, girls, stand in a single line so I can put these on you. Don’t look so scared, Ava, they come off after the auction,” she said, rolling her eyes. “I’m also going to put masks on you,” she added. “Just a final touch so you can look more…alike.”

As Vivienne fastened the handcuffs on each girl, she put a key on the side of their panties and gave them a level stare. “For after.” She continued to give her unwanted comments as she stood in front of each girl. Sometimes, “where did they find you?” others “your hips are too big.” Nobody responded to her ”they just let her talk, cuff and slip the black, demure masks over their faces. “Ready,” she chimed before walking out of the room. “Follow me!” she called over her shoulder. The women followed Vivienne to a stage where they lined up in a row  beside one another, their shaky arms rubbing against the other’s as they looked into the crowd. A few scattered women accompanied some of the men. They watched with equal attention and excitement. The look on their faces sickened Amara.

“This is crazy,” she heard Ava whisper beside her.

“It’ll be over soon,” Amara whispered back.

Her eyes scanned the crowd again.  The lighting in the room was dim, like everywhere else, and it gave everyone in the crowd a rosy glow. Amara wondered where the man was—the one looking for her—and that’s when she spotted Colin sitting off to the left side, by himself with a drink in his hand.  Shit. Amara cursed repeatedly. She tried to see if she could spot Sam or Philip, but couldn’t. She needed to tell somebody about him. If he decided to bid on her, if he could even bid on the right her, it would throw everything off.

Before she could do anything else, the auction started. Ava was pushed up first. She stood in front of the line with her head tucked into her chest, just waiting, as Vivienne introduced her as “Number One.” So they would do it by numbers. Nothing more was said about Ava, before a woman stood up and placed her bid of five thousand dollars, only to be countered by the woman at her same table with a bid of twelve thousand. They both laughed, as if it was such a hilarious thing to be bidding on this poor girl’s body. They gave each other a knowing look, which made Amara’s stomach turn. Ava knew what she was in for, though. The girls in Méchant were prepared to give their bodies away without hesitation.

Three more numbers went by before it was Amara’s turn: Number Five. She stood, with head held down as the others had, until she heard Colin’s opening bid of fourteen thousand dollars. Her eyes snapped up to meet his. She wanted to warn him to stop. A man standing off to the other side of the room countered him. Twenty thousand. Colin raised it to thirty. Her hands sweated, shaking so hard she was forced to clamp them together in front of her body as her eyes searched the room for Philip, Vivienne…anybody who could help. The man raised his bid to forty and Colin countered with fifty. Amara waited on bated breath and sighed in relief when the man didn’t counter the offer. She should have been nervous knowing Philip would be furious if that was the guy they’d been waiting for, but a part of her was relieved. Vivienne said that standard procedure was for them to check who the winning bidders were before they left with the girls —that’s how they would know if the man was there. Maybe if he bid on one of the others and was caught, Amara wouldn’t have to do much more.

The longer she counted the numerous ways this could go, the more tied up she felt. The cuffs around her hands began to be weighty, and the mask on her face felt like it was suffocating her. Amara had to squash  an overpowering need  to get out, to run and never look back. Auction over, each girl stepped off the stage and stood beside their winner,  eyes still downcast, Amara included, until Colin squeezed her chin and tilted her face toward him. He glared at her, but she was defeated.  She met his gaze openly, brokenly, until he finally dropped his hand.

Review:
I must say… I’m a big fan of Mrs. Prestsater books! This is the 3rd book I’ve read by her. And she does not disappoint. Her writing is flawless… Her books flow perfectly… Her characters fun and witty! Her books always leave you wanting more!
I would most definitely consider Mrs. Prestsater one of my go to authors!
Oh man.,. This book had from the very first page and never let me go!!! I LOVED this book! I’ve been in a book funk lately… The last book I read started to get me out of it… This book…. Totally did the job!!! I stood up way to late reading this book… I couldn’t put it down! I finished this book in hours!
This book start off about Lizzy…
Lizzy is slightly overweight and is in a loveless marriage. And it seems like that has been like that for quite some time.
She allows her husband Jace to treat her like crap… Talk down to her… Embarrass her… Call her names…
Lizzy friends cans stand her husband Jace. They hate that’s she stays married to him.
This book has a set of core friends… Which I absolutely loved!!
Molly the oldest in the group.. She’s 40… & widowed.
Rachel.. 26 & a kindergarten teacher.
Rose… She’s the baby of the group.
Justin, Owen, & Jesse are the HOT fireman that meet up with the women mostly on Saturday’s or Sunday’s but sometimes on Fridays…  (Their workout schedule)
The guys climb the hill of death & the ladies sit right at the half way point & talk about book & wait to look at the fireman…(eye candy)
The guys know that the girls are big readers & that they are in a book club.. The fire me up book club.
They have been meeting like that for a while.
Then Justin friend Ryan get transferred to their station & sparks seem to fly between Lizzy & the new guy.
Ryan… He lived in Utah and was part of the hotshot team.
He moved back to be closer to his mom and sister.
When Ryan first met Lizzy… she made a pretty big impression on him! With her loud mouth!… After their first meeting…
Ryan & Lizzy kept bumping into each other… On the hiking trail, store… Little place… They were flirting back & forth got along well with each other…
But Lizzy made a really big mistake. Not once did she tell Ryan she was married!!
When Jace meets Ryan for the first time… I didn’t feel sorry for Lizzy at all. All I kept thinking was… You should have told Ryan along time ago that you were a married women. What she did was wrong on so many levels. No matter how bad your marriage is… You just don’t string another person along…
So when things hit the fan… She had no one to blame but yourself! Plain & simple. She knew Ryan had feelings for her.
Ryan doesn’t take the news well.
But in the end.. I feel like everything happens for a reason & it all seemed to work out for the both of them.
This story was really good. I loved how Ryan & Lizzy came together.. It didn’t feel rushed… It felt just right.
I can’t wait to read more about Rose, Molly, Rachel, Owen, Justin, & Jesse!!!
Well… I know who the next book will be about…you guys will have to just read the book to find out who it is!!

Book Summary:

You’re not supposed to want the one who torments you.

When my stepbrother, Elec, came to live with us my senior year, I wasn’t prepared for how much of a jerk he’d be.

I hated that he took it out on me because he didn’t want to be here.
I hated that he brought girls from our high school back to his room.
But what I hated the most was the unwanted way my body reacted to him.

At first, I thought all he had going for him were his rock-hard tattooed abs and chiseled face. Then, things started changing between us, and it all came to a head one night.

Just as quickly as he’d come into my life, he was gone back to California.

It had been years since I’d seen Elec.

When tragedy struck our family, I’d have to face him again.

And holy hell, the teenager who made me crazy was now a man that drove me insane.

I had a feeling my heart was about to get broken again.

Stepbrother Dearest is a standalone novel.

**Contains graphic sexual content and harsh language. It is only appropriate for adult readers age 18+

Synopsis:
Being pulled in different directions, Amara must choose what she wants to believe and whom she’ll trust.

 EXCERPT:
“It’ll be a long flight, so try to get comfortable,” he
said.
She turned to look
at him, her eyes growing with her response, “How am I supposed to get
comfortable?” her look said. She wasn’t sure if he would hear her if she spoke
so she hoped the look was enough for him to understand.  Her jaw tightened when his hand brushed
against her face as he tapped the button beside her ear that she could press to
speak.
“How long is the
flight?” she asked.
He gave her a
small smile. “Shorter than a commercial flight would have been.”
Amara breathed
out, annoyed at his evasive response. “What do you think your boss wants to
talk to me about?”
“I guess we’ll
find out together.”
Her eyes flashed
back to his icy blue gaze. “You really don’t know?”
 “They don’t tell me everything.”
“That makes two of
us,” she responded, facing forward again. She rolled her eyes when she heard
him chuckle.
“Have you found
anything on Colin?”
Amara tensed at
that. “Why are you so interested in Colin? He’s just a regular guy. He’s not
like you; he’s not involved in weird shit that gets people killed.”
“Maybe so, but
it’s always good to have something that somebody wants just in case,” he said
with a shrug. Philip reached under his seat and took a green apple out of his
bag, offering it to Amara first, which she thought was ironic in a laughable
way and annoying at the same time. She merely shook her
head.
“You mean for
blackmail? That’s why you always want to find out information on people. You
might as well just say ‘get my information on this person so I can use it as
blackmail.’”
“That’s not really
how it works,” he said, taking a bite of the apple. The sound of his chewing
was unwelcome in her ear. “I file information, and if later on I need to use it
for something, I do. I have what Colin wants most right in front of me, and he
knows it. He snuck past me once, but that was only because he had help, and I
think Samuel and I have reached a mutual agreement that he fucked up in the
matter.”
She looked at him
again, but this time he didn’t meet her eyes, he kept his eyes forward,
ignoring her. Amara didn’t notice when the helicopter began to leave the ground
and was surprised when the voices in her ears told her they were on their way
to the capitol. As she turned away from Philip to look out the window she
wondered, if anything happened to her, would it all be over? Would the sultan’s
people go after her mother, or was Amara the goal? She wasn’t a prize
wasn’t specialshe was just a girl in her
early twenties who was trying to do the right thing. She wasn’t sure what that
was anymore.
“If I hadn’t been
stupid enough to take the hit for my dad’s problems, would I still be here?”
Her voice was small, the thought escaping her lips before she thought about
speaking it.
“Your dad was only
the beginning. You made it easier for us to get to you, but no, Amara, the
reason for you being here is not that. We would have had to go after you sooner
or later. If they had reached you first, you would be dead.” Amara looked at
him, begging him to continue. “They would have used you to get what they
wanted, and then they would have killed you.”
“Isn’t that what
those men will do now, if they find me?”
Philip’s silence
answered her.

CHASING ABBY ON GOODREADS

Blurb:

The heart-stopping conclusion to the New York Times and USA Today best selling series.

Five years, six months, eight days….

It’s been eighteen years since Abigail was born with a hole in her heart. Five years since she collapsed on the soccer field. Five years, six months, eight days since she found out she was adopted.

Abby has spent five years wondering about the family she never knew and waiting for her eighteenth birthday. When Abby shows up on the doorstep of Chris and Claire Knight, her birth parents are overjoyed to see the little girl they lost eighteen years ago.

One summer is all they have to make up for the years they lost. But a summer of love soon turns into a summer of heartache.

Excerpt:

(Abby)

AMY RIDES HOME with Caleb and me after school. An April storm swooped in while we were in third period. The smell of the rain and the sound of the drops tapping on the vinyl convertible top is soothing after a long day of fake smiles. Amy and Caleb are the only people who know about the significance of today’s date. Everyone at school was wishing me a happy eighteenth birthday, completely oblivious as to how unhappy today actually is.

I haven’t told Caleb or Amy, but I’ve already made my decision about opening the safe-deposit box.

Caleb pulls into the driveway, next to my dad’s silver pickup truck, and turns off the engine. The silence that follows brings a smile to my face. They’re both waiting for direction from me.

“Let’s go. I’m sure my mom is pacing the living room, waiting for me to walk through the front door.”

Caleb laughs, but Amy shakes her head. Her wavy brown hair is damp at the ends from the rain and the light freckles on her nose are showing through her makeup, but she still looks great. My makeup is probably all gone.

“Is your mom going to freak out?”

I push the passenger door open and a few raindrops fall on my arm. “Amy, this is my mom. Of course she’s going to freak out… on the inside. On the outside, she’ll pretend like everything is okay.”

Caleb grabs my shoulder as we stroll up the front walk, then he gives it a soft squeeze.

“Whatever you choose is the right choice. Don’t let anyone make you believe otherwise.”

I smile and, for some reason, the $4,000 guitar lying in his trunk comes to mind. Of course Caleb thinks that whatever I choose is the right choice. He thinks I’m so special I actually deserve a $4,000 guitar. I could probably run away tonight and Caleb would tell me I made the right choice. Of course, if I ran away tonight I’d probably end up spending the  night with Caleb at the apartment he shares with his twenty-three-year-old roommate. So that’s a bit obvious.

“Is your dad supposed to be home right now?” Amy asks as I reach for the doorknob.

“No, he probably left work early. It’s a big day for them, too.” Pushing open the front door, I’m a bit surprised to find my dad standing in the foyer, as if he were waiting for me.

“Hey, Dad.”

He clears his throat and smiles. “I know I wished you a happy birthday this morning, but I’m going to do it again.” He extends his right hand forward and I see the gold key lying flat in his palm. “Happy birthday, sweetheart. This is yours now.” I draw in a few deep breaths, then I reach forward and take the key from his hand. I curl my fist around the sharp metal, squeezing as it digs into the soft flesh of my palm. Looking up into my father’s blue eyes, the barely disguised grimace crinkling the skin around the corners, I tuck the key into the front pocket of my jeans.

“I’m not going today,” I say, smiling so he doesn’t think this was a difficult decision to make. “I don’t know if I ever will, but thank you for trusting me to make the decision on my own. I love you, Dad.”

I wrap my arms around his thick waist and he squeezes my shoulders so tight it hurts.

“I’ve always trusted you, sweetheart. I know you’ll make the right decision for you.”

“What’s going on?”

My mom’s voice is soft and laced with worry, but it still grates on my nerves. I love my mom, but her inability to trust that I would make the right decision has broken something between us. I don’t know if I’ll ever hear her speak and hear the same voice that sang me to sleep every night until I was eight years old.

“I’m not going,” I say, letting go of my dad.

Her eyebrows knit together, but there’s a spark of hope in her eyes and a slight curl to her lips. “Why not?”

I blink a few times to hold back the tears. “Because I’m afraid of hurting you.”

“What? That’s silly.”

“No, it’s not. I can see how much you want me to leave that part of me in the past. Even if you don’t say it, I can see it in your eyes.”

“I’m sorry, Abby. I just—”

“No, you don’t have to explain, Mom. I understand.” I sniff loudly as I wipe the tears from my face. “You don’t want to lose me. And I’m lucky to have you. I know that… I don’t want to lose you either.”

She shakes her head and takes my face in her hands. “Oh, honey. You’re not going to lose me. You’ll never lose me.” She kisses my forehead and tucks my hair behind my ear.

“Yes, I’m afraid of what this will do to our family going forward, but it’s natural. We fought so hard for you, Abby. I just want to protect you. I want to protect this family.”

“From what?”

She presses her lips together as she considers this question. “I don’t know. But please don’t let my fear influence you. This is your decision, honey. Your father and I will support you no matter what you choose to do.”

I nod and she takes me into her arms. I allow myself to cry on her shoulder for a moment, before I excuse myself to my bedroom with Caleb and Amy. Closing the door behind us, I immediately take a seat on my bed while Amy sits at my desk and Caleb sits next to me.

“She’s hiding something from me,” I say as Caleb grabs my hand.

“Our parents probably hide more things from us than we do from them,” Amy replies, opening up my laptop. “Do you want me to respond to all your birthday greetings on Facebook?”

“Yes, please.”

“Not the ones from guys,” Caleb adds, and I shove him. “Are you sure you don’t want to see what’s inside that box?”

I nod quickly. “I’m not ready. I’m actually glad my mom made me wait. I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready to face the people who gave me away.”

“What if they had no choice?” Amy says.

“No choice? In what kind of world would they have no choice? Of course they had a choice. Maybe it was a difficult one, but it was still the choice they made. Why do I even want to meet someone who didn’t want me? My parents want me. They’ve always wanted me and now I’m going to risk hurting them just to satisfy my curiosity? It doesn’t make sense.”

“You’ll know when you’re ready,” Amy says, an automatic response as she scrolls through my Facebook profile and responds to hundreds of birthday wishes.

“That’s bullshit.”

I look up at Caleb and he’s staring straight at me. “What?”

“That’s bullshit,” he repeats. “You’re not going to hurt your parents. And you know that.”

I try to let go of his hand, but he tightens his grip. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know better than you do. I had a mother who didn’t want me. Really didn’t want me. But you… you don’t know what your birth parents felt about you and I think that’s what scares you the most. Not knowing.”

The soft tapping of Amy’s fingers on the keyboard of my laptop stops. I bite my lip as I try to deny that what Caleb just said is true, but I can’t. He’s right. I’m not afraid of hurting my parents. I’m afraid of hurting me.

Review:
I liked this book. I liked both MC characters. & I liked the whole story line. It was different from some of the other books I’ve been reading lately.
I guess you can say… I’ve been in a bit of a book funk.
This book seemed to get me out of it.
It was also a quick & easy read for me.
Mattie & Emily’s stories were heartbreaking. Both having been through such a traumatic experience.
Matt is a 28yr old police detective. He moved to Maine to get away from A hostage situation that went bad. He needed a fresh start.
Emily is a 25yr old juvenile probation officer. She moved to Maine 3 years ago. She had something horrible happened to her. She needed to protect herself & the people she loves. So she just walked away from her old life… Her new life…  was way different from her old life. She never wanted to get close to people…she didn’t want them to ask her personal questions. She kept people at an arms length.
When Mattie & Emily first see each other at the shooting range. When their eyes meet…. They know right away that there’s something different about each other. When they both find out that they work in the same place…
They both try staying away from each other.
But… That doesn’t work..
They seem to be bumping into each other everywhere.
Slowly… Mattie starts to break down Emily walls and she starts to let him in.
I really liked how the relationship developed between Mattie and Emily.
They took things slow.. & it all just felt natural.
I really don’t know how to feel about the whole Nathan rock star thing… it seemed kind of place for me. I wonder if he will play a bigger role in the next book?
Things happened kind of fast in the end… but… it leaves off in a mini cliffhanger…but nothing to bad…
Over all this was a good read! And I would love to read the second book to this series… To find out what happens…
If I had to pick 1 bad thing to say about this book it would have to be the over kill of details…
I like details in a book… But not all the little details…
Like…putting on shoes and socks & picking out clothes…doing your hair grabbing your phone and keys and purse and walking out the door.
Grabbing 2 towels.. One to wrap my body in & one to wrap my hair in for the moister. It’s just to much..& it almost feels like it’s filler.
That’s just one of my pet peeves in books… I don’t like it.
