Blurb:

Kate Corbin has lost her spark. From the outside, her life seems charmed. She has a handsome, long-term boyfriend and a budding journalism career at a popular Chicago newspaper. But in reality, her relationship is going nowhere, and she’s quickly losing motivation for what she once believed was her dream job. When her boyfriend dumps her unceremoniously, Kate loses all hope of finding love.

With no living family and few friends, Kate confides in her boss. Trusting that the hungry, ace reporter is buried somewhere deep inside, he gives Kate the opportunity to jump start her career. The assignment: to interview the famously reclusive R.J. Lawson, a wealthy tech genius who disappeared years ago but recently reemerged as a Napa Valley vintner. The week takes an unexpected turn, however, when Lawson refuses to divulge any information. Desperate for a lead, Kate turns to Jamie, a vineyard hand who shows her the romance of wine country—and stirs her aching heart. But his connection to Lawson is ambiguous, and when Jamie disappears before the end of the week, Kate is left to investigate another story: the truth behind the man who stole her heart.

Melanie’s 5 BIG SHINING Star Review:

I recently had what I refer to as a Pity Party of 1 and I do believe all bloggers go through it in reoccurring events. It’s when I’m dog tired from a full time job & have a household to look after, post a 10 hour workday and see that our blog isn’t garnering many discussions, comments or likes and I know that my complaints are petty and unattractive. None of which hold any basis behind why I chose to blog in the first place. I have to reach out to my blog partner, Michelle and hope that she has enough positivity to share with me to get me out of my blogger slump. These instances weigh heavily on me.

Then like a damn beacon of light, I’m reminded of exactly why I decided to blog in the first place. That beacon of light in this case was Renee Carlino’s upcoming standalone novel, Nowhere But Here. This jolted my senses and prompted me of exactly why I am so passionate about sharing my thoughts and my love of books with fellow literary lovers.

Nowhere But Here is Renee’s BEST work yet!!! I feel somewhat traitorous against her Sweet Thing series because I fell madly for Mia and Will’s story and I take absolutely nothing away from those books. However, I must confess that beyond that, I do not feel an ounce of shame about expressing my praise for her work in this novel.

Jaime and Kate’s story turned me into complete mush. I felt like a version of Chris Angel, levitating above sturdy ground and floating through my very own bubble. As soon as I began and up until the very end of the book, the noise around me vanished and no one seemed to exist. Nothing else mattered but me and the words on the pages of my e-reader. Kate narrates in its entirety and boy, does she share her story beautifully. I felt as if she took grasp of my hand and took me along her travels- both in the physical and psychological sense. I was provided with an abundant array of details, from the hustle and bustle that Chicago offered to the serene and rustic feel of NapaValley. Kate had me wrapped up in her world.

I held such admiration for her character. She was unsuspectingly magnetic; quick minded and altogether witty, she had me laughing during many, many instances. I was especially drawn to her during her darkest moments which really surprised me the most. All of the credit goes to the author because honestly, it is much easier to be attracted to a happy, go lucky character but I feel that you get to really know a character’s strength when they are most vulnerable as those are the most honest times. Now, while Kate’s inner workings are completely exposed during her darkest moments, Jaime’s character is best expressed in the light. This guy is just so genuinely good and I love Renee Carlino for proving that good guys don’t always finish last. She gave us Will Ryan and now she lays this fascinating man on our feet. My school girl tendencies were front and center, in high salute each and every time he spoke, in each look and each touch he gave Kate. Pure and simple, I fell in love.

As a blogger, there are many books out there that have kept me entertained, those that have sped up my heart rate, those that have lightened my mood, and those that are incredibly libido inducing I thought I had immaculately conceived. I relish all of these sorts of books because they give such a magical purpose; they allow us to travel outside of realities. However, there are books like this that come few and far between. Books like this one which leave a permanent mark and one that is so thought provoking, you come out with more than just a temporary love affair with fictional characters.

Nowhere But Here is prolifically inspiring. There are so many eye opening messages splayed across the pages and in a way, I found this to be a sort of self-help book, told exceptionally well through Kate’s eyes and her journey to self-discovery.

So not only did I fall hard for Kate and Jamie and their story of love, but I also came out of this with so much more. I am in 100% agreement in the belief that there is that one person who stirs our soul, the one person who makes us realize that life is incredibly fulfilling and the one that reminds us that if we just really took the time to look around, we’d find that life is pretty damn amazing.

Renee Carlino’s consistent in her God given writing skills and she  gives us something special with this book. I thank her for giving me something I could rehash over and over again.

So ladies (and gents) this is why I review, this is why I blog. It is because of authors like Renee who write books like this that make me forget all the petty and negativity. Being enraptured by stories like Kate’s and Jamie’s make me forget how dog tired I am and instead, takes me to my happy place where I come out reinvigorated.

P.S. She also gives us Sweet Thing lovers something special in Nowhere But Here. 🙂

Phenomenal X by Michelle Valentine Book Review

Image

Blurb:

Good Girl. Notorious Bad-Boy. One Phenomenal Love.

From the mean streets of Detroit rises the newest superstar of professional wrestling, Xavier Cold, better known as Phenomenal X. His muscular physique makes men cower before him and women lose their minds with desire.

Anna Cortez is fresh out of college and naive to the harsh realities of the real world. Tired of living under the thumb of her conservative family, she defies them when she accepts a job as the assistant to wrestling’s most notorious bad-boy. Phenomenal X has an animalistic nature that even good girl Anna finds hard to resist.

One night forced to share a bed in a sold-out hotel, lines blur between them and they quickly learn that one lustful night changes everything and neither one of them will ever be the same.

Melanie’s 3.5 out of 5 Star Review:

There’s absolutely no denying how much I love the typical good girl/bad boy romances. There is something really heady and hot about the combination. So when Phenomenal X was announced, I was bouncing around like a rubber ball, off the walls excited for a new sizzling read. Though I found this book to entertaining and enjoyable, there were also some significant points that I just couldn’t get on board with.

Xavier “Phenomenal X” Cold is one titillating alpha– physically strong, brooding, dominating, and all the while caring and loving. I thought Michelle Valentine did an excellent job with his character. The things that came out of his mouth, had my saliva dripping out of the corners of my mouth. Like many, he carries memories of a very sad, dark past which continues to affect his present life. It is when he meets Anna, who too harbors some hardships, does he finally start to feel truly alive. The instant connection between them is quite strong, so strong that no matter how much they both try to fight it, it turns out to be a losing battle.

Anna Cortez, is a good girl raised in a highly, radical religious household. Ready to finally be free of her overzealous father, she runs away to live the life she has always wanted have. From the very moment she lays her eyes on X, she is instantly drawn to him. She fights it, tooth and nail even going as far as making up rules for their friendship. I imagined that this would take me on a fun ride, the push and pull of sexual tension which could ultimately only lead to something out of this world.

While my eyes were rapidly moving along the words on my e reader, my heart was unfortunately not feeling any tugging or tingling sensations. My biggest issue was with Anna’s character– I had a difficult time believing the authenticity behind her. Anna is supposed to be an innocent, sheltered person who has had very little experience with an unsupervised and uncontrolled life. However, I felt as if she was just going through the motions with her new found freedom. I was missing the bright eyed, awestruck attitude which I felt was so imperative to her character. What was most disturbing to me was the lack of fire and magic behind her eyes when her and X finally find each other sharing such a profound moment together. I felt desolate throughout the entire scene. What should have been something intense and earth shattering, came off as ordinary which I couldn’t shake off for the rest of the time I was reading their story.

I however, loved every moment where Xavier’s name appeared at the top of the pages. The scenes told through his eyes were what I had expected when I purchased this book. The way he saw things and felt things were profound which captured my interest and I wish that the few parts he did narrate could have been much more.

Phenomenal X is the first book in the series and I do wish that I would have waited to read this book until I knew that the second book had been released– I had no warning that this would leave me with a cliffhanger and only have myself to blame (should have done more research!) but I was so excited about this book that I lost all sense of practicability.

I am hoping that Anna’s character matures and I am very much looking forward to more Xavier Cold. I love Michelle Valentine’s work and so, I am confident that this series will only get better. If you’re looking for an intense alpha with a heart of gold, Xavier “Phenomenal X” Cold is definitely for you!

Love, In English by Karina Halle Book Review

Image

Publish Date: April 20, 2014

A standalone, contemporary romance

Amazon US

Blurb:

He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.

He speaks Spanish. I speak English.

He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.

He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.

He’s married and has a five-year old daughter.

I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.

Until now.Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the damn truth.

***

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.

Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Spanish charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.

Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.

Something that can never, ever be.

Or so she thinks.

Melanie’s 5- BIG BRIGHT SHINING star review:

Karina Halle absolutely, without any doubt wrote something incredibly astronomical.

Love, In English is hypnotizing and dangerously addictive. The prologue in itself held so much meaning and instantly sucked me into the black hole. That prologue, had so much gusto that one could write a review from just those few sentences. I knew then, that I was in for an exhilarating ride of a lifetime.

Every muscle in my 5’0 long body was wound so tightly, I felt that at any point when I moved from sentence to sentence, I would snap. The immense feeling of anticipation had my heart beating at an almost unhealthy level. The intrigue of what would unfold between Vera and Mateo drove me to sleepless nights and with a flick of my hand, completely dismissed the impending doom of a 3 cup coffee day at work.

Vera Miles is unlike many heroines that tend to be written– “Wild hair, wild heart, tattoos and piercings.” “I love food too much, I love sex too much.” Vera was like a new taste which I never knew my palate had been craving for. I was mystified by every word that came out of her full lips, I idolized the art plastered across the canvas of her skin, the innate sexuality that coursed through her drove me wild, and her aura illuminating.  With such a profound heroine in place, this book obviously needed a hero that could both rival and somehow balance the scale– a hero that would become one with the heroine to create an explosive love story and that hero was Mateo Casalles. A hot as sin Spaniard whose accent alone could turn the most furious bull into a castrated, love sick fool. To add on to his physical attributes– well built, chiseled jaw, thick dark hair, long lashes, and his gorgeous tanned skin tone– Mateo’s undoubted charisma and his inherent machismo attitude drove me to the brink of committing adultery; which of course is completely acceptable practice when it comes to book boyfriends.

Karina Halle executes such a brilliant, mind boggling build up throughout much of this book. My eyes were bugged out, my breathing rapid and shallow– the rise and fall of my chest so pronounced that it could have easily been visible from across the room. The way that she was able to draw me in, to feel the tension just continuously building between Vera and Mateo was exquisite. I kept yelling at my e-reader ” Just f*ck her brains out already!!!” and may have even texted my blog partner those exact words. The heat which radiated between them was like nothing I’ve ever read before, all because of the fact that they had to repeatedly deny themselves of each other. What was the most compelling part of it was that the strain surging between them wasn’t only sexual, it went far beyond the physical– it bordered close to what I would define as a cosmic need for one another. There are many moments in their story where your heart feels completely full, gushing with love from deep seated proclamations of soul mates and there are also a number of moments where your love-filled heart is utterly obliterated turning it to nothing more than a pinata of sorts. When hurtful, unconscious,  and insensitive actions and words are thrown– acting like the stick intended to deliver blow after blow against that love filled pinata. Those parts of the book honestly had me quivering, looking down and seeing all the love fall out, scattered across the ground, ready to be snagged by the vultures working against them.

In approximately 456 pages, the author was able to showcase her talent in every detail told through Vera’s narration. The majestic beauty of Spain was very much alive in every bit of the book. I felt like I was walking along the cobble stoned path, buzzed from all the Spanish wine, belly sated from the various meats and cheeses and other tapas. I saw very clearly, through Vera’s eyes, the splendid scenery– the absolute wonder that one feels when seeing things for the very first time. This book is bountiful with a brilliant introduction, a sexual and ethereal tension, an emotionally packed series of complications which we pray will give us the happy ending we so long for… Does it happen? Do Mateo & Vera get their happily ever after? Well, I guess you will all just have to read and find out for yourself because I sure as hell wouldn’t ever ruin this book for you.

To close off this review, I want to reiterate the brilliance of this book. I want to applaud Karina Halle for stepping outside of the box– giving as a heroine with wild hair, wild heart, tattoos, and piercings. A heroine who loves food too much and who loves sex too much. I give her kudos for not writing a book about the typical love triangle– those that readers think could be the only kind that could make their hearts palpitate dangerously. But instead, she wrote about the other woman– the woman who is always the villain. I give her big, huge, web based hugs for giving us a new book boyfriend in Mateo. So to say that I give this book 5-stars is a lie. This book deserves, the brightest star in the universe– Love, In English is Sirius, when put next to all the other stars in the night sky. It shines the brightest; well worth the money, and undeniably a book worthy of many, many re-reads to come.

My Open Letter To Karina Halle:

I’m going to just go ahead and say it… I think that Mateo’s side of this beautiful story needs to be told. I feel like he owes us some explanation…

*What happened after the program when he had to go back to his family?

*What was the final straw in their marriage? What suddenly gave him the strength to ask for the divorce?

*Why didn’t he defend Vera in that lobby and what was he thinking saying what he said?!

*What happened when he went back to the old house? And what the hell was that kiss by her car about?! (little bit mad there, if you can’t tell, LOL)

I think that because so much of Mateo’s life is so important in their story and quite frankly his actions were the main reasons of how their story unfolds I feel like we need to hear from the man himself.

So, I ask you, oh brilliant Karina Halle… will these ever be answered and is there any possibility of Mateo’s POV?

On bended knee, alongside my fellow book obsessed/book hungover friends.. Please satiate our gluttonous hearts because… Esto no es sobre!

With that, I THANK YOU for giving us Love, In English.
